While this is a very good question, you're probably going to see many different opinions. They say that prigrams such as Nod32, Kaspersky, and BitDefender are among the best, but can you go by what you hear? I use AVG pro, which the free edition is about as good. I had Norton, and loved the protection, but it made the system very slow.

Avast and AVG seem to get the best reviews everywhere. It's your choice. You might want to try a demo if possible.

Jazib, it depends on what you want. Do you want a free version or not? I like AVG free. It is easy to use and isn't hungry for resource.
