What is your ultimate goal here? I am confused.

Simply install XP (again?)

What windows 98 boot disk did you use?

Who made your computer? Motherboard? Cd-rom? Models

The windows xp disk is bootable, so you don't need a windows 98 boot disk if your motherboard and cd-rom support booting to cd--and most computers built since 1998 support that.

can you drop into bios and check the boot order? make sure that cd-rom is the first bootable device.

Since you tried the disk on two machines, are you certain the disk is not damaged?

which specific boot disk did you use?

Also, do you get any kind of alerts when running the boot disk?

How old is the machine
