hey there.

i have 2 hard drives, a 60GB master and 40GB slave. last night i formatted my master drive which had win2k on it, and installed win xp pro onto it. i backed up my data on the slave drive first, and once windows was setp up i tried to access the slave drive and it tells me that access to the drive is denied.

the slave drive was either obviously NTFS or FAT32, but when i right click --> properties, it says the file system is now RAW. i can't run scandisk, the slave drive doesn't show up in the defrag utility volume listing, but if i run diskmgmt.msc, the slave drive will appear as "healthy (active)" and listed as NTFS.

no one i have asked knows what's going on..

could it be, that whilst i had wink2k installed on this machine, the access to the slave drive was only given to me and my username. i didn't take this permission off before formatting (it slipped my mind) and i was thinking this may be the cause, but i really have no idea.

can anyone tell me if it's fixable, or a program that can extract the data (remembering it's saying it's RAWFS) to my master drive so i can format the slave again?

Good news, is I don't think you had the partition encrypted, if so the data would probably be lost--unless you had a backup of your security certficate.

Bad news, I only remember seeing RAWFS on a floppy, or *NIX system. I have to think your system is identifying this partition wrong for some reason. Do you have another system to test the slave drive?

Hello, thanks for your nice post! In fact, last time, when my external hard disk showed as RAW file system in Disk Management, your description really helped me a lot. Honestly, this drive just weirdly asked me to format whenever I tried to access my left files inside at first. So, in order to figure out what was going on there, I immediately checked the properties and related information there. And then, found the file system of this hard disk was turned into RAW. It nearly drove me crazy when I realized all my school documents inside were lost. However, fortunately, after trying some data recovery solutions online, I did rescued most of my files back.
