volume contro icon on task bar

From a restart if I click on the volume icon in the task bar nothing happens. a few minutes later I open task manager and the volume conrrol will be listed as many as 50+ times. once I have cleard it all is fine til the next start up.
the pc is a hp pavilion xt953 with xp professional 384 mb ram
