Would eliminating some start up programs help?

I have an older laptop with 98SE that I like to go online with once in a while. It is soooo slow in opening up, I wondered if there were some things in the startup menu I could eliminate? What would be the things it MUST have checked to run properly?

I get free a free virus program with my DSL service, but when I download that program the computer runs even slower, even when I disable the firewall. I was told I didn't need one, since there is one in my modem already.

Anything I can do to speed things up, yet surf safely with a virus program?

You could go to start....run...and type in msconfig

Go to the start-up tab and uncheck the items that you don't need on start-up.

I know that....but what I'm NOT sure of is the essential things I DO need. I'm afraid of unchecking something that will make things worse.

Could you post a list of what is listed in your MSconfig program?
Also what speed is your computer P-II, P-III, AMD,? How much RAM do you have?
