well i tried it and it didn't do anything. After I entered "fdisk /mbr" the disk made some noise and it just gave me another A:\>

so does this mean that the harddrive is completely trashed, even if i try to do a clean reinstall of windows 98?


have you tried to boot from the harddrive yet?

Okay then, looks like a total harddrive failure I'm afraid.

Unless you can attach it to another PC as I suggested earlier I can't see a way to retreive your data.

thanks a lot for your time and help. Is it still possible to just do a clean reinstall of windows 98? I might just end up getting rid of the data later on anyway.

No problem, it's been a pleasure (I am a Geek at heart ;¬).

As for re-installing Win98 you could try it but it will more than likely try to format the drive and definitely loose your data. If the drives dead though you wont even be able to do that...
