My problem is that I can't get updates to XP either manually or automatically.

I've been in the XP forum before and received some painstaking advice as to what to do to resolve this. For a description of the problem and what I've done to try to correct it, see:

http://www.geekstogo...s...&hl=updates

After that, I went to the malware forum where a variety of other fixes were tried to fix this problem. Thanks to both of the people that were involved in that effort. I now have been referred back to here and have received the "all clear" from "my" My Geek in the malware forum.

Unfortunately, updates still don't work.

I suspect this is problem has a simple solutiion, but I have no idea what it is.

Suggestions, whether simple or complex, are welcome.

well since we covered the microsoft issues about your updates guess over a period of time the xp software has become corrupt its not a malware issue nor a microsoft issue but a hard drive issue
so in the next proceedure i am advising you to do this back up any data and save all important documents such as pictures and music just save it to cd

and any recovery cds with there product key handy

>>>>make sure you have your xp cd <<<<<

i was advised to tell you this in the event your updates dont work
the next proceedure requires a boot and nuke all data will be erased and you need your xp cd for this proceedure.

OK forget boot and nuke for now i did get some advice so we are gonna try them so here are three more steps for you to do you might not even need them all

Step 1
Are you getting a specific error message?
If so, go here and check it

http://support.microsoft.com/

If no error, go to step 2

Step 2

Start >Run, type
regsvr32 jscript.dll
<enter>

try windows update. Not working still? Try

Start >Run, type
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
<enter>

try windows update. Now working still? Try

step 3

Download and install the following

Sorry to be a couple of days in replying.

I'll need a few days to get ready for this. I'm in the process of doing other thiings (mainly non-computer) that I've been putting off).

I'll contact you when I have more news and/or am ready to go.

I have most of my other things done.

More importantly, with the aid of Microsoft, I've managed to get Updates doing again.

Thanks for your help. I think we can now consider this problem passed.
