[digital_distortion]

i know it is not right to post the same problem in different community forums. but right now i just cannot afford to be scrupulous. i need to know at least that i am not heading for any major disaster in the next few days. i seem to have some kind of adware on my three month old dell e1405. i have already spent many hours trying to get rid of this.
each time the system boots, the symantec autoprotect says
adware.spysheriff but each time the executable file name is different.
i am also not able to restore the system to a previous state as none of
the previous states are available even though the system restore
options are configured to set them up. here is the hijack this log.
yesterday i ran the free version of adware se personal edition and
deleted all the critical objects and even the negligible risk files.
but today there are more critical objects when i ran the adware se scan
again. can some one please take a look at this hijack this log and tell
me if it makes any sense. Please ?
I am beginning to panick because the system is behaving somewhat strangely - browser windows dont open easily and when they do, the urls some times appear with weird ugly addresses.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

Since you have mentioned Spy Sheriff, let’s try the Puper fix. Let’s see what we can do.

Firstly could you please disable Windows Defender. Open Windows Defender. Click Tools, and then click General Settings. Under Protection options, clear the Use Windows Defender to help protect my computer check box. Then click Save

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

A. Please download the 30-day trial version of: Ewido Anti-Spyware

• Please install, and update Ewido Anti-Spyware
  
• Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  
• Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  
• Under "Reports"
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
• Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
• Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.

B. Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, (right click and choose Extract All) then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

E. Close ALL open Windows / Programmes / Folders.

• In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).

Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.

F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the Programme and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

E. Close ALL open Windows / Programmes / Folders.

• In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).

Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.

F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the Programme and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

and i forgot to mention, there are two profiles on my computer. the administrator and then a personal profile. the second one also has admin privileges. it is that profile from which i did all the stuff that you suggested. and i just noticed that now, my symantec autoprotect continues to return the adware.spysheriff alert and the ewido is saying that there is a low risk malware called Not-A-Virus.Hoax.Win32.Renos.eo each time i log on.

Could you please post the path that is being recognised by your AV since Ewido reports them dead. They may be in system restore or quarantine folders.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
• It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.

• After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
• There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
  Downloaded Applications
  Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Download this file: combofix.exe to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look.

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner

There are two files in your log of which I am unsure. For that reason, I need you to submit them to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FF3980CF97.sys

And this one

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CF9A809627.sys

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

5. If definitely bad, add it to the list for deletion in the Killbox, below.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\winstall.exe

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Applications uncheck Ewido Anti-malware log then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Enigma Software Group\
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
C:\Program Files\StripSaver2\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Totem Shared\

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK

Under the "General" Tab

Ensure "Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services" is checked.

Click Apply->OK->Follow the prompts to Restart

Reboot normally

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take a final look. How’s the PC running now?

Phil, I guess I spoke a bit too soon. after about half an hour of running smoothly, the av has now suddenly told me that there is spysheriff back again. i think i will just repeat the earlier procedures oncemore and then follow up with you suggested in the last post and get back to you in half an hour or so. thanks for being around.

You'll find the problem is the MSCONFIG set up and in particular C:\winstall.exe. By making a normal load of all items, it will reappear, but I prefer to get rid of it rather than just disable it.

Just do the last fix first, if that makes sense.

the two *.sys files are not in the computer.
the killbox delete did not complete because it said:

and when i tried the winstall.exe in the killbox it said pending file name renaming, registry data has been removed by external process. i installed the missing files. was there a step i missed here ? it didnt do anything when i tried to run it.

removed all that junk both through the cc and then manually by removing the folders from the program files. now how do i find if the winstall.exe thing is still there lurking somehwere ?

actually the whole log went through. hm. does this look okay now ? if it is, i am thinking of downloading mozilla and may be i need to install somesort of spyware protection besides the symantec av.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

The Spysheriff file is the C:\winstall.exe, so if your AV is no longer flagging it, then you can say it is gone. FireFox is a good idea but don't miss the MVPS Hosts file. It is updated every two weeks or so, therefore a monthly visit will keep you up to date.
