I think I may have picked up a virus/malware/whatever. I have done everything as asked on the front page. The only thing is i did it all in safe mode. I am running Windows 2000 NT Professional. When I start my computer, everything looks normal, except the hard drive busy light stays on forever. Finally, it goes away and allows me to do my thing with the computer. After about 3 minutes of working on the computer, it locks up. I hope you can help. Here is my Hijack This Log.

I cannot scan my computer unless it is in safe mode. After scanning in safe mode, the symantec pop up tells me I have no Anig present.

This is beginning to look like it's not a malware issue, but let's run an online virus scan before we completely rule it out.


Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Panda only found what your Norton had already put into quarantine. Your problems appear to be system related and not the result of malware. Do you have your Windows disc? If so, you can run system file check that will restore any missing or corrupted files.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan. If this still asks you to put in your windows XP CD, and you do not have the CD (If you bought it preinstalled) post back for more tips, otherwise enter Windows CD.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.

on the problem computer I am running Windows NT 2000. I do not have the disk. I have tried to run sfc /scannow, but it does not work.

Yes, I know it's Windows 2000, but sfc is still an option if you had the disc.

Can you determine a certain point in time when this issue first started? If so, look carefully at any new hardware, drivers, or programs that were added or updated about that time.

Otherwise you can run some very basic maintenance.

Clean out your registry using a good registry cleaner. One that I like a lot is Ace Utilities Registry Tuneup. You can download a trial version from here.

Sam,

I performed all the steps requested. The computer boots up normally, works for about 3 minutes, and then freezes up.

When the problems first started I was browsing the internet. My anti-virus popped up and said I had some sort of trojan virus. I immediately shut down, and ever since then, my computer has been this way. It has come far, as it would take a while to boot up, then would lock up almost immediately.

I was finally able to run my symantec, and trend-micro anti-virus online. Both of these did not help.

The only way I can do anything now with the computer is thru the SAFE mode.
