All of a sudden a couple of days ago, whenever anyone logs into our home PC and opens up Internet Explorer, we get a popup informing us that Windows is closing Windows Explorer for my safety.
When this happens, of course, there's nothing we can do but shut down. It started out happening most of the time but now it happens every time we open IE.
I'm not sure if there is a connection, but at the same time I noticed a program running on each active ID, named pizza.exe. The file pizza.exe was located in C:\ - I deleted it, since I didn't think that Microsoft would be running a program by that name. (I have no idea where it came from or how long it was there, so there might not be any connection at all between that file and my current problem.)

After I did that I ran SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware SE, removing everything they found.

Then I shot over to this website and downloaded what I needed - so far I've run Cleanup!, Ad-Aware again (using settings recommended here) and Ewido.

I wasn't sure if I should run HijackIt yet, in case there are specific settings I needed to use.
I am, however, attaching the logfile created by Ewido in case that is helpful.

If you still need help with this, please run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, click on the "Save Report" button an save the results of the scan to your desktop.

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

I've tried to run the active scan several times and it will not work. It gives the appearance of running for about 3 or 4 minutes while the timer counts down to 0, and then tells me there was an error in downloading it.
Originally it was being identified as a virus by my Avast! AV software, but I disabled the network provider and it seemed to run ok then...until it 'finished' and gave me the error message.

The 4th and final time it appears to have shut off Avast! completely.

The Panda website is misleading too - it says there is no need to install any software, yet what I am doing is precisely that, according to the window that opens. I'm not exactly ecstatic over my AV software getting shut down, either. Is there another option?

I'm very reluctant to shut off any AV and/or firewall features, what with all this trouble already - but if that's the way I need to fix it then I'll keep trying. I have Avast! antivirus and Kerio Personal Firewall, in case that info helps to indicate why the online scan didn't work. My platform is Windows XP Pro SP2. If you need any more system info just ask.

To provide a bit more information, Windows was using Data Execution Prevention to shut down Windows Explorer whenever I went on the internet. Today I finally was able to keep that notification window up on the screen long enough to get siome useful information form it. I changed DEP's config to NOT shut down Windows Explorer and then rebooted. The Taskbar still seems to disappear for a second if I navigate from one webpage to another, but overall it seems a lot more stable. I can do stuff.

Also, I neglected to state that the popup windows I was getting were from adfarm.mediaplex.com. I am now getting popup windows related to real estate. Aggravation has caused me to not focus though, and so far I haven't written down the web address, but I will next time I get a popup.
I had also gotten a visit from a Win antivirus 2006 popup at the same time all this was starting, and amid the mess and confusion, with the extreme lagtime and whatnot, I tried to just close the window like I think I should do, but it may have installed something anyway. I'm not sure.

I apologize for not including all this info the first time, but I honestly thought I had - and had a lot trouble getting back here to check. Tthis is the first time I've had a stable internet connection in a couple of days.

Try this online scan:

* Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click "Click here to scan" to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished.
  • When the scan is finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"
  • Save the report to your desktop then come back here and attach it to your next reply along with a new Hijack This log..
Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

* Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

I can generate the Uninstall Manager list, but when I click on the "Save List" button, the application appears to shut down. The window closes and nothing else happens. I can't copy the list from the window because I can only select one program name at a time.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Before you post the next Hijack This log, please open it in notepad and go to Format > Word Wrap. Uncheck Word Wrap. This last log you posted was too mixed up to analyze. Word Wrap will do that.

Please open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

Also run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

After the updates have downloaded, click on the "Scan Settings" button.
Choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
Under "Please select a target to scan", click "My Computer".
When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

I've had trouble all along running the Open Uninstall Manager function in HJT - every time I click on the Save List button, HJT just shuts down. If that is supposed to happen, and the list is getting saved automatically somewhere, I have no idea where that would be.

I'm running Kaspersky now, and will post the results along with another HJT log, when it's done.

Scan process completed.

===================================================

HJT crashed when I ran it, presumably because IE was running for so long due to the scan. I will reboot and try running it again.

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Hijack This 1.99.1 then delete the Hijackthis.exe file from your desktop. Also go ahead and uninstall Viewpoint Manager. After that, redownload Hijack This like so:

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
* Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

* Before you post those new logs, go ahead and do the following:

* Click here to download VundoFix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.

  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply to this thread.
