screen display problems - dell c400 laptop

The screen dsiplay on my laptop has steadily become more corrupted. Firstly with vertically coloured stripes and then went black occasionally returning to the 'stripey mode'. I have plugged in an external monitor which works without any problem. Is it the screen itself I should be looking to change or is there another component feeding the screen which may have gone down? Any help appreciated.

Hi. You should really check the connections for the internal monitor and make sure it's in nice and tight, and if that doesn't help, the screen might be on its way out...
