Hello, I have a DVD-RW drive it is a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B

My problem is that it suddenly wont read CDs at all, it read them before then suddenly it doesnt, i downloaded & installed the firmware update for it but did no good.

DVDs work perfectly fine but CDs dont work at all, i tried game CDs, Audio CDs, nothing would work.

Please help.

I fear the drive may need replacing as repair is uneconomical now that even multi-format DVD burners are so cheap. My guess is the laser, which has to be able to switch between two different wavelengths (one to read a CD and one to read a DVD) is no longer able to do that. It's stuck on the DVD frequency.
