Hi,
I have windows xp sp1 and tried to install sp2 from Microsoft's website and from the cd they mailed me but both ways failed. Halfway through the installation, I get an error message that says, "access denied" and am forced to uninstall. Can someone help?
THanks

Hi a778999! Welcome to G2G!

Do the following:

1. Download and install subinacl from:

http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

2. Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource
Kits\Tools folder.

3. Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

4. Enter into CMD prompt. (Go to START-->RUN and type cmd and click OK to get to a command prompt.)

5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.

cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd

6. Let the program do it's work, then run the SP2 installation.

Thank you for the help Fenor.

The program couldn't recognize the reset.cme file so I typed in the commands one by one. I haven't installed SP2 yet because a scan just dectected some spyware and I am trying to remove it. I'll let you know if it works out.
