Dear Helpful geeks,

My computer is running inexplicably slow despite deleting cookies, cleanups, and defragmenting. I've also had my pc-cillin internet security settings changed inexplicably although they seem to be holding in place now as I have set them.
As per your instructions on this site I did the following.
(1) Downloaded and ran "Cleanup!"
(2) I ran the adaware scan with the reccommended settings as suggested, but when I tried to update adaware it told me no update was available even though my definitions are about 16 days old. I'm a bit suspicious that malware is preventing the update. Adaware found nothing.
(3)I downloaded and ran CWShredder in Safe Mode as suggested.
(4) I likewise ran spybot, which I had successfully updated the day before. Spybot found nothing.
(5) Before arriving at your website I already had Pc-cillin internet security. I added BitDefender trial which scanned my computer and found nothing. I also had spyware blaster. I have removed all of thes except pc-cillin. As I examined the (huge!) list of suspect anti-spyware programs, well, I tried quite a few things and may have downloaded one of the bad ones at some point and removed it later. At any rate, on Control Panel /add and remove programs, Pcc-cillin + Spybpt s&D + Adaware are the only remaining such programs. One of these programs at one point showed that I had CWS,Trojan.Repsamo, Caishow, and Virtumonde but I haven't seen that result again in the steps you reccommend.
(6) I downloaded and ran the Ewido Anti malware (now AVG) program. nothing.

Hi spike,

Situation has changed a bit...definitely improved but maybe not cured. I was infected with the about:blank virus. Cleared it by downloading "aboutbuster" and "cwshredder", then I went into safe mode, listed and deleted all temporary files (*.tmp) from the hard drive, then ran both these programs twice and rebooted. Popup-blanks are gone, speed way better but still seems slower than it should be.

Something had also turned off my PC-cillin firewall and to get it going again I had to uninstall and reinstall it.

Here is my latest Hijack this file. Thank you so much for your help. Now that I know someone is reading this I won't experiment any more until I hear back from you. Thanks again!

Spencer.

Spencer.

Hey again speyul. I had re-viewed your log and it had come up clean and then after your next relpy I had to re-view the log again and your system has still come up clean, although there are several programs that start-up when you switch on your computer. These programs are of no need and do not need to be run at startup, removing these entrys will not damage anything on your system but instead should resolve your problem of slugish and slow computing.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes that you belive should be selected (All the entrys below), I have given information about each entry and recommend you to remove as many as you possibly can.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIModeChange] Ati2mdxx.exe
System Tray icon to access ATI graphics card settings and the Hydravision Desktop Manager, these same programs can be accessed via start panel.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eabconfg.cpl] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons\EabServr.exe /Start
Easy Access Buttons control panel on Compaq laptops. Only required if you use the extra keys.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LVCOMSX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE
It provides extra functionality for Logitech multimedia webcam devices. It is non-essential to the running of the system.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogitechVideoRepair] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\ISStart.exe
LogitechGalleryRepair/LogitechVideoRepair - part of Logitech Image Studio - installed with Logitech QuickCam cameras. Can be started manually.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don\'t need these features.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lingvo Launcher] "C:\Program Files\ABBYY Lingvo 9.0 Popular Dictionary\Lvagent.exe" /STARTUP
Popular Electronic Dictionary, can be started manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
hphupd05.exe is a process belonging to the HP Photosmart application and is responsible for keeping this software up to date. This program is a non-essential process and can be started manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon05] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon05.exe
hphmon05.exe is a process relating to the Hewlett Packard software HP Photosmart, and provides easy access to flash card reading functions. This program is a non-essential process and can be run manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CamMonitor] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe
hpzstatn.exe is installed the hardware drivers for your HP Digital Imaging solution. This is a non-essential process.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LogitechSoftwareUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\ManifestEngine.exe" boot
Related to Logitech_camera products which offers an auto update feature. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Skype] "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /nosplash /minimized
"Skype is free and simple software that will enable you to make free calls anywhere in the world in minutes" But can be started manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset.exe
Default settings software in Hewlett Packard notebook, not needed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogitechVideoTray] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\LogiTray.exe
Logitech Image Studio - installed with Logitech QuickCams. Program can be started manually.

O4 - Startup: HotSync Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\Handspring\HOTSYNC.EXE
Installed when connecting a Palm HotSync cradle up to a USB port. The Blue and Red Arrow Icon that enables Palm / Handspring Synchronizing. Available via Start -> Programs

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note: if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe_Reader application. Not required for Adobe Reader to function properly.

O4 - Global Startup: ABBYY Lingvo 6.0 Launcher.lnk = C:\Program Files\ABBYY Lingvo\LvAgent.exe
Popular Electronic Dictionary that can be run manually.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Then Reboot.

If you remove the entrys I have given you, you will see a huge difference in system preformance next time you restart your computer. After you have finished following the steps I have given to you, please post back a new hijackthis log. Also please notify me of how your PC is running now since we have removed all those dudd entrys.

Cool :whistling:

Dear Spike,

I did everything you suggested with one small exception I have a question about. You said I should remove "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe". I'm set up with a language bar that lets me switch from English to Russian input languages. I need to be able to do this. It wasn't clear to me whether removing the above entry was still going to let me do that or not---I'm sure your answer would be clear to someone with more expertise. So---should I go ahead and remove it or will I lose this capability by doing so?

Below is my HJT! log. System speed is definitely better, but still seems noticeably slower than it was a couple weeks ago. By the way, I was definitely infected with the about:blank thing---which went away after I did the procedure I described in my previous post. Basically extra windows would pop up in explorer with about:blank in the address bar and a blank screen.

Thanks so much for your help: sorry for making you go through the logs twice. Just didn't know if anyone was going to take my case. HJT log follows.

Spencer

I did everything you suggested with one small exception I have a question about. You said I should remove "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe". I'm set up with a language bar that lets me switch from English to Russian input languages. I need to be able to do this. It wasn't clear to me whether removing the above entry was still going to let me do that or not---I'm sure your answer would be clear to someone with more expertise. So---should I go ahead and remove it or will I lose this capability by doing so?

Hey again speyul, best then you leave this one alone. Rather not risk anything, what we have got rid of now is the main stuff. :whistling:

By the way, I was definitely infected with the about:blank thing---which went away after I did the procedure I described in my previous post. Basically extra windows would pop up in explorer with about:blank in the address bar and a blank screen.

Well you done a good job clearing it up, I see no remainings of the infections. You are clean of all malware. :)

Thanks so much for your help: sorry for making you go through the logs twice. Just didn't know if anyone was going to take my case. HJT log follows.

No problem at all.... Making me go through the logs again was good practice, thank you. GTG is always ready to help you. :help:

Below is my HJT! log. System speed is definitely better, but still seems noticeably slower than it was a couple weeks ago.

I have noticed something else that could have made your computer slow down, its the WMF Hotfix so I recommend you uninstall it, microsoft has come out with an official patch. So you can just update windows after you have removed it (http://blogs.chron.c...ficial_wmf.html)

Goto:
> Start
> Run
> Type in "c:\Program Files\WindowMetafile\Fixunins000.exe"

If that does not work use Un-install from the Add/Remove programs window.

Please re-open hijackthis and check all these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06647158-359E-4D10-A8DE-E6145DA90BE9} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3C7195F6-D788-4D50-BA72-2EE212EDAC78} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2C0A5F28-48D8-408B-9172-9C6121025BCE} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Then Reboot.

Please re-post a new hijackthis log and let me know if there is any improvment in system preformance.

Cool

Hi Spike,

Here's what's happening:

I tried to uninstall the WMF hotfix as you suggested but ran into some problems. When I go to Start -> Run -> and type in "c:\Program Files\WindowMetafile\Fixunins000.exe" I get "Windows cannot find c:\Program... --make sure you typed in the name correctly and try again.
So, I tried 'browse' and looked for the file in question. In the program directory there is no "WindowMetafiled" folder. There is a folder called "WindowsMetaFilefix", which contains only an icon "compile".
I also couldn't find anything in the Add/remove programs list that looked like this. What should I do?

OK, I've done the changes with HJT! and rebooted. The system still seems a bit slow, but it's much better than when we started; I have no way of measuring the exact difference in speed from what it was. Even before the problems started I had upgraded to PC-Cillin 2007---perhaps it's just doing more than the 2006 version and slowing things down a bit. I also decided to try Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird instead of windows explorer and Outlook express. Better; especially the web browser is way faster than explorer and that was a big part of my "sluggish computer" complaints.

HJT! log follows. Let me know what to do about the Hotfix issue (see previous post) and if you have any general suggestions for speeding up my system and startup. Thanks again.
Spencer

Hi again Spike,

FYI pc is definitely still running way too slow. While I have no way of measuring it and it's better than it was, my wife was out of town two weeks and as soon as she got back and tried to use it she was struck by how slow it was. Let me know regarding the wmf hotfix and any other ideas about speeding things up.

Thanks.

Hey speyul, sorry for the late reply I have been having problems with my connection.

It seems like the uninstall has been removed so you can do this:

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to this item:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Then Reboot.

This will stop it from loading up during startup... Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. Then please delete this folder using Windows Explorer:

Goto:
>Start
>Run
>Type in "Explorer"

C:\Program Files\WindowsMetaFilefix

While still in explorer search for this file and also delete it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmfhotfix.dll

If you cannot find this file goto:
> Start
> Run
> Type in "cmd"

This will bring up the command prompt then type in:

"del C:\Windows\System32\wmfhotfix.dll"

Even before the problems started I had upgraded to PC-Cillin 2007

Yes this could also be a reason for slow preformance, but this is common and I think you should rather leave it running.

I also decided to try Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird instead of windows explorer and Outlook express. Better; especially the web browser is way faster than explorer and that was a big part of my "sluggish computer" complaints.

I think you made a very good choice using these programs.

any general suggestions for speeding up my system and startup. Thanks again.

Ok, there are certain ways we can speed up the computer. First

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

Windows will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this. This will take an hour or so before it gets to the desktop.

Click start then All Programs, Accessories then System Tools, click on Disk Defragmenter. Click on C:\ and then on Defragment.

This will take a bit of time. But it is really affective, you can preform these types of scan like every 3 months.

Also if you download TuneUp Utilities 2006 there is an internet optimizer.

Once you have downloaded and installed "TuneUp Utilities", open it and goto "Optimize And Improve", then click on "Tune Up System Optimizer". Once the new window has opened click on "Complete Maintenance on computer", click "Start Scan". The proccess will take a few minuits, when complete click "Correct Problems".

Once again go back to "Tuneup System Optimizer" and this time click on "Accelerate downloads and internet surfind", select your connection type (eg. 56kb), then "Next" and "next" again when done. Then click "Finish", when the message box comes up asking if you would like to restart, click "No".

Open "Optimize & Improve" again. This time on "Tuneup RegistryDefrag. follow the prompts until registry defrag has been completed, restart your computer.

Try and see if there is an improvment in any way, this should make things run a bit faster, not just when clearing your history, but the entire system preformance. This is my trusty program I always use and It think this will also become one of your fav optimizing programs.

I think we about done now all I need is the last hijackthis log and also please tell me if this system is running a bit faster. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have and I will be happy to answer them.

Cool :whistling:

Dear Spike,

I followed all of your instructions and hit no problems doing so. Unfortunately the computer is still inexplicably slow even after all these changes (although definitely better than before we started). I have another computer--as desktop ---that is now running exactly the same software and I believe it has about the same processor speed (probably slightly slower) and also 512Mb of RAM---has all the same antivirus ware, windows defender, etc. loaded. It seems about 5 times faster than this one when I call up programs. As it is I can wait something like 20 seconds between when I double click on Thunderbird or Firefox before the program fully opens, compared to 5 or so on the other computer. Something isn't right, but I'm stumped as to what it could be after all this. I'm open to any suggestions. Working through the mess of this computer for the last 10 days or so I tried all kinds of things. A number of times it got hung up and I called up Windows Task Manager and ended some processes that I thought were hung up---but I didn't necessarily know what I was doing, so who knows what I may have screwed up myself? I also used various online scans and spybot and adaware, they all found and corrected things at various times before I got to you.

Maybe I messed up something critcical we are not seeing and only a windows re-install may get it---don't particularly want to do that, either.

Well, thanks for your help to this point in any case. I'm thinking of upgrading to 1GB of RAm, but first I want to understand the radical decrease in speed I've seen in the last two weeks.

Ah---one other thing I wanted to ask about. I have about three years worth of emails in my inbox in outlook express, and now in thunderbird as well. That's certainly slowing down the opening of those programs. Whats the best, easiest ways to offload those to a disk and clean them out of the inbox which now has several thousand emails in it?

Hey there speyul. Here it goes...

followed all of your instructions and hit no problems doing so. Something isn't right, but I'm stumped as to what it could be after all this. I'm open to any suggestions

We'll get to the bottom of this. :help:

Working through the mess of this computer for the last 10 days or so I tried all kinds of things.

Yes, I am sorry it had taken so long, but I'm sure at the end it will all work out. You have tried all kinds of things and theres still alot to try, sooner or later something has to work. :whistling:

Well, thanks for your help to this point in any case. I'm thinking of upgrading to 1GB of RAm,

I am glad I could help in anyway, if you have to go to the XP Forum the trusted techs will give you some tips and let you know if you have to upgrade. (Upgrades are always good). :help:

but first I want to understand the radical decrease in speed I've seen in the last two weeks.

There are many things that could have caused this, so we can't say for sure what it is. But we will find the problem and fix it. :)

Yes it can slow down the startup of the program. Read up on this:

http://kb.mozillazin.../Profile_backup

Maybe I messed up something critcical we are not seeing and only a windows re-install may get it---don't particularly want to do that, either.

Maybe a system file was corrupt after getting infected with all that malware, but its not time to re-install yet. I have one more trick in my hat and maybe this is the one the crowd has been wanting to see. Let try, it's called "System File Checker". This scan will pick up any corrupt windows files that may be giving you problems and replace them with a new working one.

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot you system.

After that let me know how the computer is running... If you still have problems then we will consider the Windows XP Forum where the other geeks will find out your problem and fix it. I know it has taken time and if you say you don't want to format, then this is the best option.

Cool
