it shuts down my internet connection and drains the cpu usage. Also, spybot shows returning problems that all begin with "Windows Security Center", like "Windows Security Center.FirewallOverride..."

Thanks again

Hi obrien321 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

I need to get you to move HijackThis to a folder of its own (not in a Temporay Folder) so that nothing gets deleted by mistake

1. Right click in an empty space on your desktop.

2. From the Menu, click New, then Folder and a folder will appear on your desktop.

3. Name the folder HJT

4. Cut/Paste your current version of HijackThis into the new Folder that was just created.

5. Now, run the program and post a fresh HJT log for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Please disable Ewido Anti-Spyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

A. 1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

sc stop Win32Task
sc delete Win32Task
del delete.bat

3. Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes.

4. Double click delete.bat.

B. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
C. Please RUN HijackThis.
  • . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside the following item:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {38D7F0BE-8622-66D1-887C-050877878D50} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\alnuwnn.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {73364D99-1240-4dff-B11A-67E448373048} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6monl.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [np] c:\windows\system32\upnp.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ms] C:\DOCUME~1\owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\8523\gm.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ,
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: artm_newreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
D. Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot
    • Then click on the "All Files" button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    c:\windows\system32\upnp.exe
    C:\DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS\owner\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\8523
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\wintasks32.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

E. Please run HJT again, click Scan, produce a log and post it in your reply.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hello again, I had a problem re: the disabling of Ewido - I don't have a full version, so there was nothing next to 'Resident Shield' (just an 'i' and 'n/a').

final log is below - it seemed to have gotten everything except two (apparently the ones that are eating the memory and blocking my internet, i guess).

I did get an error when I was deleting the selections- I wrote it down: "... has occured at procedure: modbackup_makebackup (sItem=o20 -appinit_dlls:,) - error #5 - invalid procedure call or argument"

thanks again, here's the log:

Hey! Your fix made my internet work again - to celebrate, i downloaded AVG and did a scan - now everything seems to be working great - those remaining two files are still on there,

O20 - Winlogon Notify: artm_newreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll

but maybe they aren't critical if everything is back to normal.

if you think i still need to remove those somehow, let me know. If not, thanks for everything, Trevuren.

You truly do God's work

A. 1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

sc stop "ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard"
sc delete "ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard"
del delete.bat

3. Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes.

4. Double click delete.bat.

B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: artm_newreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\artm_new.dll

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Hey Trevuren, I have the new hjt log. I think you have gotten those last two, and maybe it was Ewido that was screwing things up. Incidentally, when I tried to run Ewido this morning (twice), the computer crashed almost immediately and restarted (maybe it is infected or something?). The modem lights are still blinking like crazy, and something keeps trying to install itself that AVG keeps blocking. Anyway, here is the log. thanks much - richard.

That log is also incomplete.

If you are having problems with Ewido, then please uninstall it and do the following: (Same program, different name and you should get another 30-day trial from it)

First download AVG AntiSpyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG AntiSpyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete, run AVG AntiSpyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG AntiSpyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG AntiSpyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the report scan along with a fresh HJT log for review.

Hello sir, I was unable to get a report from AVG - after completing the scan and deleting entries while in safe mode, it said "report not available" or something similar.
Here is a fresh hjt log -(hopefully it will post the whole thing, rather than just partial).

thanks

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Please DELETE Malicious Items from the AVG AntiSpyware Quarantine

A. Open AVG AntiSpyware by double clicking its icon located in the System Tray down by the clock.

B. Click on "Infections" on the AVG AntiSpyware Toolbar, then select the "Quarantine Tab"

C. Choose "Select All" at the bottom of the AVG AntiSpyware window, then click on the "Remove Finally" button and EXIT the program.

3. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
Reboot your System

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks SO much for everything, Trevuren - I have done every suggested download and task and am quite relieved at this point. I don't know why you guys deal with this voluntarily, but I am sure grateful that you do.

Take care,

Richard O.
