Hello,

My system was in SERIOUS trouble 3 nights ago, but I've spent many hours doing the recommended solutions. here goes:

trendmicro: clean
adaware: keeps finding the same stuff no matter how many times I run it
Spybot: clean after 2 tries
CW shredder: clean
TDS: this made this biggest difference, system runs much better (not 100% yet...) TDS found and fixed 5 trojans, but complains it can't open "l?sass.exe" because its locked.

Below is the Hijackthis log. Thanks in advance for your help! :tazz:

Launch Notepad (start > run > “notepad”), and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Select “all files” in the “save as type” field. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?a**.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Ok, boot your computer into safe mode by tapping F8 while it's booting.

Go to start-search-files and folders. Search for l?a**.exe . When it's done searching look for the following file with these properties:

Date & Time: 03/17/2005 09:06 AM
Size: 408 KB

When you identify that specific file with those properties. Delete it. Empty recycle bin.

REstart computer into normal mode, and post a new log.

Save the file to the desktop. Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal. Then please restart your computer.

Your log is clean!

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log is completely clean. ;)
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE-SPYAD
A tutorial on using IE-SPYAD to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here

Keeping these programs up-to-date and running them regularly can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
[OR]
I notice that you do not seem to be running antivirus software. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client; it may be downloaded here. Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :tazz:

Thanks very much for all your help! ;)

This whole mess started when my Norton subscription ran out, and I decided to switch from Norton and free zonealarm to trendmicro's pc-cillin all in one. I never had any issues before, and then one week after the switch, well, you know what happened. I switched back to zonealarm, and just last night added a router, and I've noticed zonealarm hasn't had to block anything in the last 12 hours, as opposed to about 50 things an hour before. so I'm hopeful! I will read through your suggestion list when I get home tonite.

thanks again!
John
