Welcome to geeks
little step to test the cd physical side
- check boot sequence in bios to boot from cd
(if it is there in bios the boot is seen)
- put an xp cd in the drive reboot on it
(if it boots to it, physical connection is good)
- turn off computer

drive letter assignment check
(while the computer is running)
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: diskmgmt.cpl
- press: enter
see if the cdrom is there and lettered

post back results of these checks please

If the aforementioned doesn't work, have you looked properly to see the drive is connected properly? No bent pins? Post back..

that is good advice, but for the moment I am trying to read the situation without a screwdriver, simply
- does boot read
- does the xpcd load
- does the drive letter show in diskmanagement

time to use the screwdriver then, disconnect it reconnect it(if you know what you are doing)
also fill in if you haven't mentioned it yet:
- what model of computer = hp dc7600
- what os, XPpro or home = XP home
- how old is it(is it under warrranty) =

it is fairly new and the thing is i got it on a "hook up" type deal and there's no warranties with that. i took the drive out and everything looked ok. going to hook up another drive to see if it will recognize it.
