livecd problems

i stick the cd in and everything looks fine. i choose start live cd and so far so good. then after a couple minutes ill get a message looking like this(its only partial cuz my camera died so i couldnt get the whole thing):

atal: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/40 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0x

i get that a whole bunch of times then i get the below on once then the above repeats and then the one below once again and so on.

99000] Buffer I/O error on device dm-1, logical block 16668688

i got the free live startup cds for kunbuntu and unbuntu and neither works. version 6.06 LTS for pc. does it make a difference since im on a laptop?

also sometimes before the place where the errors pop up it just stops....the load bar fills then empties and does this for a while. help would be appreciated.
