Hello,

I'm getting additional web sites popping up whenever I open my browser, doesnt redirect,
just opens more unwanted pages. Ran Hijack This and found a couple of suspicious things
that wont go away when I check them and select "fix checked", not even in safe mode.
The ones I know for sure are suspect are:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\jugox.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,upmsjek.exe

Could you please take a look, any help would be appreciated

Dear gonflyn, :whistling:

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log. :blink:
*************************************

Can you tell me in detail if your yearly subscription to your Norton Antivirus software has expired or is up to date?
**********************************

You are currently running HijackThis from your desktop. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or "HijackThis" and then please move the "HijackThis.exe" executable there.

Dear gonflyn, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Since your yearly subscription to the Norton Antivirus software has expired on your computer system, AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client, as do AntiVir or avast!.
I suggest you install and run one of these anitivirus software programs.

Here are the steps you should take to install your new antivirus software:1. Create a folder on your desktop and name it "Antivirus"
2. Download the .exe or .zip file to this folder but do not run the executable or zip files respectively at this time.
3. Restart your computer, without connecting to the "Internet".
4. Uninstall your old antivirus software through the "Add/Remove" programs via your Control Panel.
5. Install your new antivirus software, without connecting to the "Internet".
6. Restart your computer and re-connect to the "Internet" and run your new antivirus software and fix anything it finds.
Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :blink:

Downloaded AVG and did all those steps. Antivirus found 1385 infected objects, (that'll teach me to let my antivirus expire *sheepish grin*) all some sort of Trojan, the AVG said it healed them.

The good news is that I can now get rid of the suspicious entries in the HijackThis log that I mentioned b4,
the bad news is I'm still getting the pop up websites! , gnash, gnash, gnash. Maybe you can see something
else abnormal.

Thanks again

Dear gonflyn, :whistling:

You may have a "Qoologic" virus on your computer system.

Please download Qoofix by Rubber Ducky to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Qoofix.zip file, and choose "Extract All". Extract the Qoofix files to the C:\Qoofix folder
  • Close all windows and programs, including Internet windows.
  • Go to C:\Qoofix and open the folder, then double click on Qoofix.exe
  • Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish
  • If Qoofix finds an infection, select yes to restart your computer
  • You will now find a log from this tool, located at C:\Qoofix\Qoofix Logfile.txt Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply here.
Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :blink:

Dear gonflyn, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot, it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you fix this item:

You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it...

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\PSDream

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer.
****************************************************

Please download and run a Free Trial of Trojan Hunter at http://www.misec.net...rojanHunter.exe. Please restart your computer.
***********************************

TrendMicro™ HouseCall ActiveX Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.
*******************************

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-Aware SE at the following link: http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm

Restart your computer.
************************************

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :blink:

Dear gonflyn, :whistling:

I was looking at your last HijackThis log and I am "concerned" about a few entries in your log.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RCT2_TT.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\CHRISA~1\Desktop\RCT2_T~1.EXE /r

Do you have any idea about this software or this line in your HijackThis log?

Remember, while I am working with you to try to rid spyware on your computer system, please refrain from installing any new software on your computer system, unless I ask you to install software on your computer system.
***************************

On two occasions, I asked you to move the "HijackThis.exe" file to a permanent folder. Please do this now. See posts: #2 and #8.
*************************

I would like you to rerun post #10 again.

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Bxgn] C:\WINDOWS\system32\??mbols\d?xplore.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\??mbols\d?xplore.exe <-- (Note: The questions marks may represent any chararacter. Be aware of the location of the file and folder that contain a question mark.)

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :blink:
