[JustAnotherGuy]

I've got green text links that go to web sites like Popupsearches.com and when I navigate the web I get many popups (at sites that shouldnt have any) to other types of sites. Example: I google something and a popup occurs with what I wrote for another search engine.

If you installed Newdotnet intentionally, I suggest removing it. If you didn't, definitely remove it Please visit this site and follow the instructions there to uninstall it.

Please download Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below

• Update
  • Select Check for updates.
  • Then Connect and download the latest reference file.
• Click Start
• Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
• It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
• Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.

JustAnotherGuy, 'System Event Notification' is a valid Microsoft service, so we can't simply delete it. That file is not good, though. Sometimes HJT reports (file missing) for 023 lines when the file is present. We need to make sure the file is gone.

• Start Hijackthis
• Click on the Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
• A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchGst.exe and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
• You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the 'Yes' button.

Again, make sure you don't delete svchost.exe.


Rescan with HJT and place a checkmark next to this entry:

There is no such file named svchGst.exe when i go to look for it. i even did an entire search of my hard drive for it and came up with nothing.

Ok, it's good that that file doesn't exist. We're going to have to kill that HJT entry in the registry, but first I need to know where it is .

Download Registry Search and doubleclick to start it. Enter "svchGst.exe" in the edit and click "Ok". Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well). Post this text in a reply here.

JustAnotherGuy, this entry is becoming a pest. Let's do this:

Click Start >> Run and type "services.msc" (without the quotes) in the box that appears. Look for a service called System Event Notification. Double-click it to open, then click the Stop button and change the 'Startup type' to Disabled. Exit services.msc.


Reboot, run HJT again and fix this line, if it's still there:

That took care of it, your log looks good, but I still think we should try to reset that Registry key correctly. Are you logged in as Administrator on this machine? Let's try Registry Search again.

Create a new folder on your desktop and put Registry Search in there. Enter svchGst.exe in the Edit box and click "Ok". If it exports the key this time, please post the report.

i am not logged in AS administrator but i think i've given myself the administrator priveledges somehow. I'm probably wrong though because i have tried to log in AS the administrator before and i was not able to log in (password difficulties, do you know any way to reset passwords?)

i created the new folder called "temp" and it still gives the same error. and does not do anything new with the log and does not create any extra file.
