Problem switching users

This is annoying!

We have two users, both logged on and we regularly switch between them with no problems. Now, however, after booting up, we can log onto one user ok but when switching to other user, the screen goes black, monitor goes into standby for a few seconds then comes on but only shows the mouse pointer. We have hard reboot to carry on.

PC has AMD Athlon 64 CPU, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium mobo, running XP Pro SP2.

Not sure if this is a hardware or software related problem.

Have found that by logging off one user before logging onto the other, it works fine. It goes wrong if I try to switch users (using either Start-button+L or Switch User option on Start menu).
