Hello again ... I went to the start page and did all the steps, and there does seem to be some improvement ... but I keep getting a viruscan synchronization error report when I boot up the system, and the panda scan showed psguard was still present ...

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log. :blink:
*************************************

Please go here and download the latest version of HijackThis: http://www.spywarein.../HijackThis.exe
Very Important!!! Please create a permanent folder for HijackThis (I suggest C:\HJT or C:\HijackThis)
and move the HijackThis program there. HijackThis will create a number of backup files which may be lost,
along with HijackThis, if left in a temporary folder.

To create a permanent folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Always make sure you run HijackThis from the permanent folder.

Run HijackThis, have it scan your computer and save a logfile. Copy and paste the entire contents of the logfile here.

Don't mess around with your computer's registry, you could mess up your computer system.

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

Can you tell me in detail who is your present Internet Service Provider?

Can you tell me in detail if you are still using your AOL software?

Can you tell me in detail if you have ever used comcast software?

Can you tell me detail how you are connecting to the Internet (e.g. dialup, DSL or Cable)?

It looks like your Internet Service provider is verizon, if it is verizon, did verizon intall the "Verizon Yahoo! for FIOS" software?

Wow! You're like, clairvoyant!

I did have AOL, but not any longer. I THOUGHT it had been uninstalled, but I guess not ??? ANd I DID have comcast for a very short time but it was not a good experience ... again, I thought I had uninstalled it properly ...

I have Verizon now ... it came on a disc and I chose Yahoo over MSN for the homepage thingy ... I have no idea what the heck that FIOS thing is or how it got there ... I didn't install anything from Yahoo myself, but I guess the software that came with Verizon may have ...

I have a dsl connection.

I promise NOT to mess with my registries!

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

Can you tell me in detail what antivirus software you are using and if your yearly subscription to this antivirus software is up to date?

I have seen traces of McAfee antivirus software on your computer, have you used this antivirus software in the past?

Can you tell me how many antivirus software applications you are using on your computer system (if you know)?

Can you also tell me the names of these antivirus software applications (if you know)?

Yes, I had McAfee, but then when I got DSL with Yahoo, I downloaded antivirus software from Yahoo and it's supposed to stay current ... I pay $12/month for it, I think ... Wow. I really sound stupid. When I went to download the antivirus software from yahoo, I kept getting some kind of error message that McAfee hadn't successfully uninstalled, although I followed the uninstall wizard directions ... then I read somewhere online that sometimes the psguard thing will keep antivrus software from being changed out ...

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html
****************************************

Please do a search (i.e using the Windows XP's Search Feature) on your computer for this file: hdaryap.exe. If you find this file please give me the "directory path/location" of this file.

If you did not find the above file (i.e. hdaryap.exe) , tell me that I did not find this particular file.

(Note: From the HijackThis log, the file in question is located in the following directory, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\hdaryap.exe", I just want to see if the file is actually missing.)

See the following link as a reference: http://www.cyberwalk.../find-file.html.

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Restart your computer in normal mode.
Please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.

CLEAN! :blink:

I get these messages when booting up the computer:

Error loading c:\windows\cfgmgr51.dll. The specified module could not be found.

Error loading D0CE0C16BJ. The specified module could not be found.

Avsynmgr.exe application error
The information at "0x00000000' referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate, Cancel to debug

Svchost.exe application error
The information at "0x7c910f29" referenced memory at "0x206c6576". The memory could not be read.
ClickOK to terminate, Cancel to debug

Then I also got -
Generic Host Process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close. (then it offered me a chance to send an error report, which I did not).

Thanks again!

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

This is how I would like to help you with your computer problems:

I would like to get rid of the spyware first from your computer.

Then I would like to get rid of the leftover remnants on your computer. I would like to get rid of your AOL remnants, McAfee remnants and Comcast remnants on your computer system.

There is too much stuff going on in your HijackThis log that you don't need. However, I will leave the applications associated with Version Yahoo! for DSL (that you are paying for).

You have adware on your computer system and I will try to remove this adware from your computer system.

Then I will take steps to rid yourself of applications that failed to uninstall properly (e.g. McAfee, AOL and Comcast).

Dear middle-aged, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Go to Start -> Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok. Scroll down and find the below service/services:

hdaryap

When you find each service, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.
*******************

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

hdaryap

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.
****************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
