Tried to close every single one of them but no luck. In safe mode it works fine. What should I do?

Sony Vaio, Windows XP Pro SP2, 18 mths old

disconnect from the internet while doing this
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: msconfig
- press: enter
- click tab: startups
- make a note of which are enabled
- disable all of them
- restart the computer
if the computer works fine you will know that one of these startups is causing the problem
- look up the startup on these links

- keep the ones you really need, protection, etc., the rest you can dump once you know that they are not needed

Tried msconfig. Unfortunaly did not work.

clarification, you turned off all start ups and yet your computer didn't shutdown
- does it not shut at all or after a very long time
- what program have you installed recently

Everything is fine until the last moment when the computer says "Shuding down computer". It seems that it is going to shut down but it doen't. All programs closes but at last the computer still running. It does not shut down compleately. It works fine in safe mode.

At first I had problems with Adobe Reader, after that Macromedia Flash. I dont remember when it exacly started but 2 months ago I had my computer serviced because of viruses and after i received my computer back from the shop thats when all the problems started (windows not genuine, Adobe, Macro Flash), I tried to take it back to the shop but they are out of business.

Have you got anything connected by USB leads, if so, remove the leads and try the shut down

What were you able to do about the shop installing non genuine software

Only USB Leads are the printer and my PDA Phone and they are not connected all the time. I used to have an external hard drive but thats broken... Well I tried and no luck again!

I went to a local computer shop and they installed windows again. I believe thats how I got a non genuine windows copy.

another idea

XP's exit sound file sometimes gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab

Under Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK.

Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.

If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

Wait a minute....didn't see that you already posted that you have SP2 loaded. Have you double checked to make sure that SP2 is loaded?

Go to start....control panel.....click non system icon.

In the General tab is should say what OS you have and say the SP number
