Computer does not shut down

When it hangs, it hangs on the windows is now shutting down message? Nothing else? Always that message?

I think the last message that pop up in the computer says "windows is shutting down". After the last message disappears the computer is supposed to turn off but is doesn't. You could see it still running.

OK....reason I was asking is because there is a specific issue with some USB cameras and XP and them causing shutdown problems.

Do you have Norton as your AntiVirus?

Also, if you try the restart or log off options...does it do the same thing and hang?

go start right on my computer and open it .....on c drive right click and click on properties select tools then click on check now make sure both boxes are checked then click start
if a black pop appears dont be alarmed you should see a flashing white bar ..type the letter y for yes hit enter reboot
let this proccess go through 5 stages
give that a try ....................have you tried cleaning your computer using system tools
its in all programs..accesseries ........system tools .............. disk clean-up

also after the computer stands by it doesn't turn back on, so I had to disable stand by
