Hi,

I want to upgrade my Compaq Presario 6410 NX computer. It currently has the following:
Processor: AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1.67 GHz
Frontside Bus Speed: 200/266 MHz
Processor Architecture: PGA462 Socket A
Chipset: Via KM266 8235

Can I put an AMD 64 2 3800+ processor in this computer? If I can will I have to modify the fan to accommodate more heat?

Thanks,

No you will not be able to upgrade to the amd 64 3800+ or anything above. You will not be able to run any of the newer amd 64 bit chips.. Your motherboard only supports the socket A and the 3800+ uses the socket 939 or the am2 socket.

You should start to save up for a new pc if you are looking at a higher performance increase.

Hi jrm20,

Thanks, I’m waiting for the Core 2 processor computers to start coming down in price and will purchase than. In the mean time I was hoping to improve my performance. I am upgrading my RAM in the mean time.

Thanks again,
