[Kerry]

I'm having problems with pop up ads. My blocker seems useless against it. I think the source of the problem may be a dlmax.dll file which I'm having trouble removing.
Please help.

I removed the "tt" in http for security reasons.

Now close all browsers and open windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked'

Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by tapping the F8 key while your system starts up.

Now do a search on your system and remove the following folders/files if present:
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\MI2\ <-- Folder
Remove this folder if you did not install it

Reboot into Safe Mode and Scan with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE
Then Scan with your Anti-Virus Program

Delete your temp files:

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty Your Recycle Bin

Reboot normally and post a new HJT log by using Add Reply:

I uninstalled Mcaffee about 14 months ago using my Control Panels "Add or Remove Programs" button.

Also there is this entry:

Do you know what that program is?

Yes. That program is no worry. It's for a piece of hardware, a MIDI/Audio interface for use with a music creation program I use.

I would recommend uninstalling all remaining files from McAfee, it might cause some issues.

Other than that your log is looking good, are you having any issues.

Once you have done this go ahead and post back a new HJT log and I can give you some go forward suggestions.

I think I've got rid of that Mcafee clingon now.

No more unwanted pop-ups, although I did install Firefox about an hour before I made this thread and in that hour I didn't have any pop-ups, so Firefox might have been blocking them. Eitherway, the Adware still must have been running in the background and the file I suspected as the cause is gone now. Thanks.

No major issues, except Firefox seems a little sluggish at times. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it, It's a lot quicker than IE but it seems to have trouble bringing up pages now and again. Is this normal?

Also there is an icon on my desktop I'm not sure what to do with.

Nice to see you switch to Firefox, keep IE and only use it when needed.

Per your question regarding sluggish pages in Firefox, that sometimes happens. It could be a number of things, unless you want a dialog of technical explanations regarding Webservers, IPvX, DNS or a host of other items you should be OK.

Click on the throbber located in the top right portion of your Firefox browser it will lead you to some info regarding Firefox and what customizations you can do.

The config icon is probably a backup of your registry created when you removed McAfee.


Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera is OK as well.

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.
