Hi,

I am unable to up load my home page at godaddy.com using WS_FTP or their suggest FTP Client gFTP.org..

I have submitted the following to godaddy and Ipswitch without results. Godaddy's support doesnt seem to understand my dilemma. Here is what I sent them and called them about with no help forthcoming:

Can someone tell me how to use Ipswitch WS_FTP for Godaddy?

I have had my home page domain registered and hosted by bizland.com for years. I decided to change to godaddy.com because of price. Since doing so I can not get my page up. Godaddy support hasnt been able to help by e-mail or phone. Their web site said use gFTP.org as the FTP Client. I went to their site and did their download and nothing works.

I have been using Ipswitch at my former host (bizland.com) for years with no problem. However I do not know how to use Ipswitch WS_FTP with godaddy. Godaddys tech rep. gave me a bunch of instructions about host names, passwords, and server names. I dont know what to do with them when I click my Ipswitch WS_FTP icon that I use to access my bizland account.

Can you help me?

End of post.

I don't know if anyone here at can help but this forum has been better than all the supports I have tried anywhere. If anyone can help me with this please do. I have e-mailed my previous host (bizland.com) and asked them how I can transfer my domain and hosting back to them. So far I havent received a reply.

Thanks,

adkron.

FTP to most sites is pretty cut and dry. You provide the ftp address, your ftp login name and you password. Some require the actual path (like www or public_html) but most will take you to your root directory.

The client you use to connect is inconsequential. You could do a command line FTP and as long as you have the PROPER settings to FTP you would be able to FTP to the site.

I prefer SmartFTP as it is simple to use, free and is similar to Windows explorer in that you can cut and paste.

I would verify that you have ALL the proper settings from GoDaddy (Ipswitch is pointless in this discussion as like I said, your choice of FTP client is meaningless) and then DOUBLE check that you have all them. Have them provide you with an email that contains all the settings you are required to have (again, login, password, URL and path are really all that is needed). Be sure to enter the information EXACTLY as they provide it (for example your login name might be adkron but they require that you use adkron+yourdomain.com or [email protected], etc).

You can also see if you can connect by doing the following steps:

1. Click on Start then Run
2. Type in "cmd" to open a command line
3. Type in ftp
4. Type in open yourdomainftpsiteurl.com
5. Enter your login and hit enter
6. Enter your password and hit enter

At this point you should be in the default root directory of your site. If not then either you entered the wrong information, what they provided is incorrect or they have some sort of setup issue on their end at which point you need to contact GoDaddy support.

Good luck...

(oh, you type in the word "quit" to get out of the FTP bit above) :whistling:

Hi thenotch,

I downloaded and installed smartFTP. Clicked file than New Remore Browser.

The following appeared:

Protocol Normal FTP

Host

Path

Login Type Username & Password

Username

Password

I filled these in as follows:

Host: NS3..SECURESERVER.NET (I received this from Godaddy)

Path: I left this empty (I didnt know what to put here)

Username: (the username supplied to me by Godaddy)

Password: (the password supplied to me by Godaddy)

I clicked ok and the following message was received:

[16:51:12] SmartFTP v2.0.999.21

[16:51:13] Connecting to 64.202.165.10 Port: 21

[16:51:34] Client closed the connection.
[16:51:34] Active Help: http://www.smartftp....kb/index.php/58

I tried using Ipswitch WF_FTP and a similar thing occurred. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Can you help me?

I also tried your:

I think if I can resolve what I am doing wrong using smartFTP I will be able to up load my page.

Thanks for taking the time to help me,

I filled these in as follows:

Host: NS3..SECURESERVER.NET (I received this from Godaddy)

This is where you are wrong first. This is a NAMESERVER. You cannot connect to a nameserver. GoDaddy should have provided you an email with a login, password, and FTP credentials. If not, you need to contact them again and have them resend the email.

This is the reason you received this:

[16:51:12] SmartFTP v2.0.999.21
[16:51:12] Resolving host name "ns3.secureserver.net"
[16:51:13] Connecting to 64.202.165.10 Port: 21
[16:51:34] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
[16:51:34] Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...
[16:51:34] Client closed the connection.

Your host should be your website. Your username should be what they provide and then your password. That is all you need. From the looks of things your problem is with entering the nameserver instead of the host name.

Hi thenotch and lil cat luver,

I did enter my web site as my host name and I realized I had to set up another username and password beyond what godaddy supplied me with. After doing so I went to WF_FTP and was able to transfer my homepage files to the right side of Ipswitchs WS_FTP page. I also checked with smartFTP and my files were there. Yet when I enter my homepage name i.e. adkron.net in the address line of Explorer I get I get this message "This homepage is coming soon" and a link to click to WS_FTP. When I do so I see instructions that I have followed. My domain name is adkron.net. Put it in your address line and see what I mean.

Thanks,

adkron

P.S. I'm sorry my reply took so long. The electricity was out here for hours.

Did you put those files in the "www" or the "public_html" directories?
If not, you won't see anything. If you put them in the root directory of your site you need to move them to one of the directories I mentioned above.

GoDaddy does NOT create a default FTP account like most hosting companies do. You need to actually create an FTP account if you did not already.

Hi thenotch,

I am not sure what you mean by this. How do you put things in the "www" or the "public_html" directories?

I have cancelled my Godaddy account but I am still bothered by not being able to figure out how to get my page up.

Thanks for your help,

Did you switch the nameservers associated with your site at the original host to the new ones provided by your new host? It sometimes takes a day or so to resolve.

You should be able to view the folders and files you uploaded, no matter what client you use. You also may have a control panel that wil let you check and manipulate this information

Is your homepage called "index"? It usually belongs in the public html folder, like The Notch pointed out. What sort of software was your original website built out of (was there a third party store, for example?) and how did you get the files from the old webhost so that you could use them on the new webhost?

Hi Johanna,

I did switch nameservers associated with my site at the original host to the new ones provided by my new host. I went back to bizland and they said it will take a few days.

I have been able to view my file that I had loaded with bizland using bizland's file manage or SmartFPT and Ipswitch's WS_FTP.

I don't know how to do the control panel option. Maybe you can walk me through it.

I originally uploaded my home page by using a book on html and writing it my self. I first put it up using a free server (geocities.com). I tiered of the pop up ads, established a domain using a server in Australia and went to bizland for hosting. When bizland started as a domain server I switched my domain to them. When I went to godaddy I switched my domain again and now I am back at bizland. All this spinning around is getting me dizzy.

I do use Adobe's Pagemill on occasion but usually just use html. I have a book on javascript but just haven't had the time to get into it.

Thanks for your help,

Adkron
