Hi Guys & Gals, Its my first time here so I hope Iget this right.

I have a XP operating system and recently I had an attack of Spyware or a trojan. Did the usual virus checked spyware checked and I did find some spyware and I though it had all been removed as Spybot said it had completed the operation. Then up pops a red circle with a white cross which alternates with a yellow question mark and a pop up as follows:

Critical System Errors. Then it tells me to go and pick up some AntiSpyware which they want me to pay for so not doin that. Then I kept trying to find a name and location of the thing after hours of looking and detecting with differant programs NAV 2005 Spybot and others I CANT GET RID OF IT and now I find some windows stuff is missing like Network connections, the folder is there but there is nothing in it and Device Manager is empty so I guess this thing has hid them from me.

Please find my Hijack This log as follows:

Hi madman29 and Welcome to GeekstoGo!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

After posting C:\rapport.txt,Please download Combofix to your desktop.
http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe

Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.

Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt

Please post that log in the next reply.

So far so good! :whistling:

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction on the F-Secure page for proper installation.

  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.

Lets see what we can do about this.

Let me see a HijackThis Start Up log.

Open HijackThis and Click the "Open Misc Tools Section" tab.

Select Generate StartUpList log and make sure that both Boxes beside it are checked:

Put a check by:
List all minor sections(Full)
and
List Empty Sections(Complete)

It will produce a NotePad Page,I need you to copy the entire contents of that page to the next reply.

Hi, Thanks for your reply but I must tell you what I have found out.

I went into Admininstrative Tools/Component Services/Services (Local) in there I found almost everything disabled so I spent the next hour setting everything to Automatic and starting the services, i then re-booted and tested Device Manager and Network and all are now back and working again so I don't know if this the same kind of thing your talking about above. Can you advise me if i need to carry on with your post or do you think that all will be well now there seems to be no spyware or Virus infections on the pc and I have re-booted about 6-7 times and shut down the pc and all is now working. I look forward to hearing from you and hope this info helps you as well. :whistling:
