Hi Guys,

I'm in a dilly of a pickle, no less because I teach college online, so my computer is my job. Like a dummy I got infected with Virusburst, and then like a double dummy I downloaded Winantispyware 2006 pro to 'fix' the problem. I used Roguescanfix to nix the Virusburst "critical system errors" bubble, but I'm still stuck with all this winnonsense. I tried Vundofix and VirtumondoBegone, but neither found anything, and it still pops up, complete with the "update" yellow shield thingie in the corner.

Here's my HijackThis:

Thanks very much.

My Angel of Mercy--Hooray!

Not sure if you saw this, so here you go:

History: Thursday, Nov. 6, I was infected with a whole bunch of crap while downloading a VideoCodec for Windows Media Player to watch something on MySpace. I got nervous and panicked, and downloaded "Help," in the form of Winantisypware 2006 pro, only to find out I was making my situation worse.

Actions taken: After posting on GeekstoGo and waiting for a response since Sunday, I've poked around and tried some DIY solutions. I've run the following fixes: RogueScanFix, VundoFix, Virtumundobegone, Smitrem, Smitfraudfix, and ComboFix (I can furnish the reports if you need them). I've also downloaded and performed scans with the following: Spybot S&D, AVG Antispy 7.5, and Ad-Aware. I have McAfee Viruscan Enterprise and I've performed numerous systems cans with it.

Results so far: Visibly, I no longer get a flashing x to ? that's yellow and blue telling me about bogus critical system errors. The icon for WinAntiVirus no longer shows up in my control panel (it's orange with a brain looking thing around it and a cross), and I dont' see Virusburst anywhere, either. But Wintantispyware still shows up in Add/Remove programs, and still runs on startup. I exit it everytime, for whatever good's that worth. But I need major help uninstalling it.

UPDATE 11/9: Uninstalled Netscape 7.2, installed Firefox in its stead. I attempted to uninstall Winantispyware, which got rid of it in the Add/Remove Programs list. I'm still getting some bad results on Panda Scan, though, (finds 8 files of spyware and a few suspicious ones) and both AVG and SpyBot still find things upon restart. I plan on downloading and running CleanUp! as well as updating to IE 7, though I rarely use it.

Posted below is an updated HiJackThis Log. Thanks SO much for any help you guys can bring. I teach online so it would be a Godsend if I could fix this sooner rather than later. I hope I haven't messed things up more with my tinkering--it's all based on what I've read here and in other trusted forums.

Lookin' better. Computer's running more quickly and I don't THINK the little bogus Windows Update shield pops up upon startup (it does so after a red shield comes up saying the firewall is disabled. Once the yellow shield disappears so does the red shield).

Note: When I went into safemode and Windows Explorer to delete linux and winole, all I found was winole.exe-up. It was a text file, and I deleted it.

Below is a new HiJackThis log as well as the ActiveScan, which found what it thinks is gunk but actually just looks like the fixes that I still have on my desktop.

This is what I got with C:\Program Files\Common Files\ers_startupmon.exe:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

Here's Combofix:

I see that you have also posted at Spywareinfo. Please note that we are spread across numerous forums. There are only a hand full of us that volunteer our time to work logs, and posting duplicates on other forums just ties up two helpers on one user unnecessarily.
Alright, lets finish cleaning you up.

=======================================

Upload this file at Jotti’s and post the results here:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tmp.reg

Then,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DC6] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\dc6_startupmon.exe" /min
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ERS] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ers_startupmon.exe" /min
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ERS_check] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ers_startupmon.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DC6_check] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\dc6_startupmon.exe"

Now close all windows and browsers other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
Close hijackthis.

Then,

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ers_startupmon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\dc6_startupmon.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\Linux.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winole.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Reboot.

Run combofix.exe again and post the log here, along with a new hijackthis log.

Sorry about the dual posts. I'm new to these forums and I didn't realize there was overlap (thought they forums were separate entities with separate staff). Plus I got some (mis)information that SpywareInfo had fewer posts and so was less swamped and could help faster. But, again, my aplogies--is there anything I do to correct the mistake? Delete my post, or flag it, or otherwise nullify it? Let me know and I'll take care of it.

In the meantime, here is the Jotti's result, the combofix log, and a fresh HiJackThis:

Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

Now, launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run]
"Windows Compliant"=-
"Microsoft Update Machine"=-

[-HKEY_USERS\s-1-5-18\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run]
"Windows Compliant"=-
"Microsoft Update Machine"=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Reboot your computer.

Post a new combofix, please.

Entered the code like you said--everything went smoothly. Here's a new combofix:

Excellent job! :whistling:

Go back Jotti's Malware Scan and upload this file and post the results:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\uwasfsd.sys

Then, one last scan to make sure we got everything:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Aw man, no sooner do I earn a smiley emoticon than I have trouble running a program! I don't know what this one means, but I'm gonna post it anyway: :whistling:

I can't get SDFix to work. It hangs upon reboot when the fixer is running: the C: CommandPrompt (not sure if I'm naming that right) reads "fixing registry files" and "cleaning up infected files" and "this may take 4-5 minutes," but then it just hangs. I've run it four times with two different downloads, and I've gotten the same result on each occasion.

Here's the Jotti result:

Nothing to worry. It was only to double check. Your other logs all looked good.

Your log is Clean! :whistling:

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
