I use Firefox as my browser and run Windows Defender, Zone Alarm, AVG and Ad Aware. I downloaded a codec pack called K Lite from Downloads.com and now in some web sites but not all, when I have Javascript on it changes the setting to allow popups.

I have run all the programs as instructed in the required steps before posting,
Nothing in Ad Aware
Nothing in AVG Spyware
One infection in Panda.

Hi a-hillboy. Welcome to GTG.

Are you still having troubles? If so, I need you to do something for me and then we will get after it. :whistling:

We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet!

Many thanks for your reply. I have got rid of most of the popups but not all. The main problem is that my popup blocker is switched off for some sites, though not all. Some of the sites it changes on are CNN and New York Times.

Hi Coachwife6

Many thanks for your reply, I hope you can help me.

I have got rid of most of the popups but not all. The main problem is still some sites are changing my popup blocker to on when I have javascript enabled. CNN and the New York Times are the ones I notice most. No changes noticed when javascript turned off.

Did this start when you updated to IE7? Do you work in firefox at all? If so, does it do it in firefox as well?

What are the two entries in your trusted zone? I wouldn't keep them there but we can work on that later.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Hi Coachwife6

I always use Firefox, trouble started before I downloaded IE7, only downloaded it on patch Tuesday 14th Nov. I only use IE for Microsoft updates.

Only happens in Firefox as far as I know as do not use IE.

I am sure it started when I downloaded KLite a codex pack. I have uninstalled KLite.

Panda scan showed the following one infection,
Adware:adware/oemji not disinfected windows registry.

The following is the winpfind log

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows sometimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi Coachwife6

I have followed your instructions. Re your question about EPrompter, this is a small program that I found to manage my email accounts, it keeps them all in on place.

Looking at your last post I think we are in different time zones, I am in the UK.

Highjack this log.

I have just tried CNN.com and my popup blocker is still being changed to allow popups in that site. Javascript always allowed for that site.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Welcome back. Glad you had a nice holiday. :whistling: Trying to make one last item for Thanksgiving dinner for tomorrow. Two pies down, rice casserole to go.

Did that help at all?

Although my computer is running much faster after following your advice, my popup blocker is still being changed to allow popups on sites where I have javascript enabled. I use Noscript on most sites but some like CNN or New York Times I always allow scripts.

After I go into CNN, when I open the options tab CNN is listed in the allowed sites, this happens with all the sites were javascript is allowed. Even though I clear it, it is back the next time I visit the site.

I have not downloaded AdBlockPlus from Firefox, do you think that this may cure this?

Have a good thanksgiving.

Hi Coachwife6

I have followed the instructions, and all my settings are the default settings, though I have just unchecked the disable or replace context menus, to try that.

Something is letting sites place themselves on my whitelist (I do not have anything on the whitelist as I do not like popups) when I have javascript enabled, it does not happen in sites when javascript is not enabled.

I am still thinking that it had to have happened when I downloaded KLite a codex pack from Download.com. Even though I deleted all mention of KLite.

The entry for the Panda scan Adware:adware/oemji is what I think was downloaded with KLite (from info from Google) but I do not know how to find it or remove it.

Could it be this?

If not, many thanks for trying to help me.

Aberhillboy.
