I was using my computer and its a laptop and my dog started pressing buttons and the desktop flashed to the default Windows Background, the little hill. My icons were gone and I couldn't make the little squares on the desktop by dragging my mouse. I got my background back, but I still don't have my icons back. I WOULD REALLY NOT LIKE TO USE THE WINDOWS CD CAUSE ITS A REAL PAIN TO DO A REINSTALL FOR ME. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Have you tried?
SYSTEM RESTORE from safe mode
See if you can get in safe mode, try this
1. Restart your computer, and keep tapping F8 during the initial start-up
until you get options, select Safe Mode with a command prompt then press enter.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that
has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Look for the most recent system checkpoint created before the errors to restore
From....

Hi Drumbum667...

Right click on the desktop, point to "Arrange Icons By", and make sure "Show Desktop Icons" has a check next to it...if not, click on it to select it. Wait a moment for the desktop to refresh and see if your Icons return.

I did the system restore but yours did the same thing. I purposely disabled it and it did exactly what it did before. Well thanks both of you guys.
