Hi guys

For the past 2 days i have been trying to get rid of a infection. I have used Norton Anti-Virus,Spybot,Spyware Doctor,Spy Sweeper, and Smithfraudfix. However after hours of scans and fixed problems, the same things keep coming back;

*When i run windows explorer i sometimes get the message-
"Buffer overrun detected" , and then it mentions something about shutting the internet, which is wierd because the Internet explorer application is running fine. I noticed that when i click ok or close the message i recieve two of the same infections everytime; one called download and another infostealer, but Norton removes these.

*When im browsing the internet or when i load it up i sometimes get the same 3 anoying pop-ups, one about an online casino, another about an mtv radio station and the third telling me to download winantivirus2006.
I sometimes also get some other sort of pop-ups; sticking with the scroll of the page. These can only be closed by closing the internet explorer application.

These are the main problems, there are a few more but im just worried about these for now. I'm desperate for any advice on what to do, please help. :whistling:

Hi FreedomFighter and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. You will be prompted to create a shortcut on your desktop. ACCEPT. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Regards,

Trevuren

B. Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

A. Please Disable Spyware Doctor

1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Uncheck "Activate OnGuard"

B. We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

C. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {16A81967-9BDA-4EC8-9F23-3F0C2B1E9DF1} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CB94E9DD-A899-4988-ACDD-7180D15DDE49} - (no file)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using the Add/Remove Programs module in your Control Panel, please UNINSTALL the following program(s). These programs are either malware or come bundled with malware or they are foistware, i-e programs that are usually installed without the user's consent.

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fccabby.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtttuv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sptd4701.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccbbb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winjks32.dll

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,
I complete the steps. When i tried to uninstall the Java updates in safe mode it said:-

"The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or of the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

While in safe mode i found some of the files and deleted them. When i loaded my computer in normal mode i got a message saying that Daemon tools couldn't work without the sptd file, so i uninstalled Daemon tools as well. In normal mode i also uninstalled the java updates.

Heres the HJT log-

Well Done!! :whistling:

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
Reboot your System

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks ever so much :whistling:
I think my computer is clean of any trace of malware.
But when i tried to uninstall Daemon tools, it said that it couldn't. When i load my computer it alerts me saying that Daemon tools can't work without an STPD. Do you know how i can stop this from happening and uninstall Daemon tools?

Uninstalling Daemon Tools is a nightmare for some people.

1. If you have a copy of the program, first try to install it on top of the existing copy. It may just copy the files it needs.

2. If that doesn't work, using Windows Explorer, locate the !Killbox folder and try to find the following file:

sptd.sys

If you find it, copy it to the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\, restart your system and hopefully, that should fix your problem.

Please keep me posted.
