I am reinstalling windows XP home edition on my Gateway laptop and I am getting an error message.

The message says: Fatal error

An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

Data error (cylic redundancy check).

If you are installing from a CD, there might be a problem with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc.

Press OK to view the Setup log file.

OK

So I press OK and the next screen says:

System Setup log - (C:|Windows\setuperr.log)

Error:

Installation Failed: E:\1386\asms. Error Message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

I thought when this happened once before I reset some system numbers to zero or got the system to reset some system numbers and everything worked fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about fixing this error?

I have a blue operating system disc and a red applications and drivers disc. Gateway laptops don't come with yellow discs. Everything that is on the yellow discs for Gateway desktop computers is on the red disc for Gateway laptop computers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Almost certainly a damaged CD or, at least, some corrupted files on the CD.
This may help:
