I used to have speakers on this computer, but removed them for a while. Now they are back and everything is plugged in correctly, but i am not getting sound, even from headphones. I do not believe my sound card is dead, because when windows starts up i hear sound from my speakers where it says operating system is starting up. I just upgraded the driver for it and it worked until i restarted my computer. Also the sound is not muted. THat i know. Any help would be appreciated.

let's see:

before anything esle
- try headphones to rule out speakers

runbox command
- press buttons on keyboard: winkey + r button
- paste: mmsys.cpl
- press: enter
- click: advanced
- see if your settings are for your configuration.

runbox command
- press buttons on keyboard: winkey + r button
- paste: sndvol32.exe
- press: enter
- check to see if none have turned down or muted

runbox command
- press buttons on keyboard: winkey + r button
- paste: devmgmt.msc
- press: enter
- see if there are yellow blobs on sound devices, means missing drivers.

you wouldn't always see errors, I had a friend with the same proplem, I simply had him uninstall the Sound card and reinstall it through device manager

(Right-click My computer > Manage > device manager > right-click your card > uninstall >rightclick again > scan for new hardware) follow what it says, usually it's just a simple "yes" or "ok" and sometimes nothing at all. This fixed my friend's problem and I did it in person, so this should work for you.

I tried all of these suggestions so far no sound. After uninstalling my sound card and reinstalling it i get an error while reinstalling it saying that the device is not properly configured (code 1). So i installed the driver from the site, and reinstalled it that way. I get sound while shutting down my computer after reinstalling the drive, but not when it starts up.

you wrote 'I get sound while shutting down my computer after reinstalling the drive, but not when it starts up.'

sorry one point not clear here, are we still talking about the sound in general or are we now just talk about the startup sound which is different problem form what you wrote in the first post

my sound was working for the past 4 years. Its just now that it stopped and i still hear sound from the speakers when the computer starts, but neither speakers or headphones are working when the computer is on. The sound works again after i install the driver again, until it tells me that it needs to restart and after i restart it no longer works again.
