Hello. I am at wits end with spyware/malware on this machine (A Celeron Win XP SP1 machine). I have downloaded the latest SP1 updates, and run AdAware, Spybot, CWShredder, CWSServiceRemove, HJT, Stinger, and AboutBlaster.

I was successful in removing some spyware ('Microsoft Windows.hta'), but still am having problems with About:blank browser hijacker.

I would appreciate advice on this HJT log.

Thanks!

Are you still having problems? If so, please do the following:

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.../hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

Thanks. After looking through additional posts on this site (and others) I determined I was using an older version of HJT. I also figured out how to kill the malware.

I don't remember the exact steps, but roughly:

In 'normal mode'.
Download AboutBlaster (don't run yet)
Run Ad-aware & clean system
Start->Run->Services.msc, and stop the following services (Network Security Service, & Workstation NetLogon Service)

Reboot into safe mode.

Run HJT, scan, and remove:
1. Most of the R1 entries (the ones containing res://C:\WINNT\system32\boyej.dll and About:blank).
2. The netqp.dll O2 BHO entry
3. The O4 Netqp.exe and msib32.exe entries.

(I spent a lot of time searching the web to determine which of the DLLs and EXEs called out in my HJT listings were ok and which were malware related).

Exit HJT and then delete these files from your machine.

Run AboutBlaster.
Start->Run->Cleanmgr (cleanup temp files)

Reboot into normal mode. All should be well. You may need to reset the homepage on IE and delete any offending entries in IE->Favorites. Once the malware is gone, they won't come back this time...
