Hi. For some reason, Explorer keeps closing when my computer goes on screen saver and such. Also, even stranger than that, my Firefox bookmarks mysteriously disappeared yesterday, and I had to restore them with backups... I know I didn't do that on accident. Please see this log...

Hey Stormknight6,

Sorry for the delay - you know we get quite busy here!

I don't see any obvious signs of malware. However, we can run some scans and see what's up, if you'd like. The first think I'd like to do, however, is clean the rest of Symantec off of your PC - that could actually be the source of some of your issues. I see you have AVG in your startup, so I assume that's your AV of choice, but you still have a number of Symantec services running, and two AVs don't play well together.

Go to Start > Run > cmd. At the command prompt, type the following:

sc stop "Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler"
sc delete "Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler"

sc stop "LiveUpdate"
sc delete "LiveUpdate"

sc stop "Symantec Core LC"
sc delete "Symantec Core LC"

sc stop ccEvtMgr
sc delete ccEvtMgr

sc stop ccPwdSvc
sc delete ccPwdSvc

sc stop ccSetMgr
sc delete ccSetMgr

Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Also, do you know if you set these restrictions?

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now, in your waiting room post you said you keep getting little alerts that there's adware - could you be more specific about this? Is it simply because your system is not always acting right, or are there alerts from a program?

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply, I'm sure it was well worth the wait  I just wanted to make you aware incase you weren't noticing these things...

(1) I use Norton GoBack as well as Norton Ghost. Should I still remove these keys you listed?

(2) The log I provided you might not be up-to-date. I got tired of AVG after finding out that a compressed folder I downloaded had a Trojan... Good thing I always scan before opening lol I have since switched to NOD32.

Now, question... In response to the Control Panel present setting, I don't know what it does really... What kind of restriction does that bring?

Also, that Adware alert came from a NOD32. Here's what it says...

C:/Program Files/AIM/Sysfiles/WxBug.EXE >> WISE >> MiniBugTransporter.dll - Win32/Adware.WBug.A Application

I guess AIM comes with that for ads or something.

As far as my system, I get the blue screen on occasion, but I don't think it's Malware related. It seems to only happen when I plugin my external hard disk, but that's probably a hardware issue. Thanks for all your help, and I'll await your response before doing anything :whistling:

Stormknight6,

The following are all related to Symantec Antivirus:

Symantec Core LC
ccEvtMgr
ccPwdSvc
ccSetMgr

The liveupdate and liveupdatescheduler services you can leave - I believe Norton Ghost may use those also. They're simply services that will automatically check for updates to your Symantec products. You can delete the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
<-- this will prevent you from changing settings in IE in Tools > Internet Options. It can be set by a program such as Teatimer, within Spybot Search and Destroy, because it will prevent unauthorized changes to your homepage, etc., which is common with hijackers. I believe Zonealarm may also have that functionality, but I haven't used that recently, so I'm not positive. If you used a program such as that to protect your IE settings, that line can show up. It can also be set by a hijacker to prevent you from changing settings back. If you think you've used Zonealarm to set this, you can leave it as is.

C:/Program Files/AIM/Sysfiles/WxBug.EXE <-- I believe this is Weatherbug - AIM probably installs this for you. Weatherbug was considered spyware at one point and is still frequently detected as such. I don't believe this is malicious, but if you're not using it, it can be deleted.

O23 - Service: GoBack Polling Service (GBPoll) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton GoBack\GBPoll.exe
O23 - Service: Norton Ghost - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Agent\VProSvc.exe

The above are the services associated with Norton Ghost and the Goback service, which you want to keep.

I hope this helps - let me see a new log, since you've changed to NOD32, and we'll see how it looks.

Hi again  I can't seem to remove that folder... I checked it using Keith's unlocker application, and it says that Norton Ghost is using 3 of those files. So I selected all but those 3 files and tried to delete, but it says that they might be right protected or in use. There shouldn't be anything accessing them. As long as they aren't causing problems, I'm tempted to keep them, unless you think I should. Also, I currently use SpySweeper, which protects my favorites and internet settings. Here is the new logfile, as requested. Thanks :whistling:

Stormknight6,

You can leave them as long as there doesn't appear to be a conflict with your NOD32. The Spysweeper settings you have are good - we'll leave the internet settings as they are.

Now, given all that, are you still having problems with anything else? I believe in your waiting room post, you said you'd fixed the explorer issue. Where does everything else stand?

Well, over the past few days, I got a couple of blue screens, but I'll deal with that next time I see it. I was mainly looking for anything nasty that might have been causing that issue... Now, one last thing... I have a program that somehow got installed that I cannot remove... It's called: My Way Search Assistant ... I don't see the option for me to use it in IE, and I know I didn't install it... Does the logfile show anything about it? Add/Remove programs won't let me remove the thing, of course. Thanks :whistling:

Hmm, interestingly enough I don't see the My Way Search Assistant installed, and it usually does show up in a log. Is it just an orphaned entry in your add/remove list? Also, you haven't disabled anything from startup in msconfig, have you?

It might be abandoned, but I didn't remove it myself, unless one of my protectors did. As for msconfig, I never go there lol I have a startup program that allows me to just select what I want to start on boot and what not to.

Stormknight6,

If you have mywebsearch installed, it would be in c:\Program Files|Mywebsearch. If you have that folder, you should be able to delete it. We can also try to remove the entry from Add/remove programs.

Delete an Entry from the Uninstall List
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the entry you wish to delete
  • Click on Delete this entry
  • Click "Yes"
See if that takes care of it.

How weird is this... It doens't show in the HijackThis list, but it still shows in Add/Remove Programs... Also, there is no folder in Program Files for it...

I think this is an orphaned entry. You can leave it, or we edit the registry to remove this. I know you're a tech trainee - are you comfortable enough to edit this?

This is directly from Kelly's Korner - http://www.kellys-ko...xp.com/xp_a.htm:

Add and Remove -Removing Invalid Entries in the Add/Remove Programs Tool

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Each program listed in Add/Remove Programs has a subkey listed here. Locate the correct subkey for the program in question and right click it, then select Delete. You may want to choose Export, first, to export the key to a REG file. The REG file can be re-imported if you find you made a mistake.

You may have to contact the manufacturer of the program that you want to remove if you need to clean up the disk and registry entries. The procedure described in this section does not remove all the files and registry entries used by the program; it removes only the reference in the Add/Remove Programs tool.

Since you don't have the folder, and there's no remove button in the add/remove list, I think this will take care of it.

I don't see anything about a search assistant inside the registry either... Oh well, as long as it's causing no harm, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Thanks :whistling:
