Thanks so much for your help. My computer has been getting progressively slower to the point that I have to wait 10-20 seconds after each mouse click. At times, it locks up completely. There seems to be alot of hard drive activity during some of these delays.
A couple of factors that may have contributed:
- Upgraded from ME to XP
- Removed McAfee virus system and installed EZ Armor Suite,
but still get the McAfee splash screen at start up.
Neither of these actions specifically resulted on a slower computer, but may have contributed. I'd appreciate anything you can suggest to 1) get rid of the last remaining parts of McAfee and 2) get the computer back up to speed.
System:
Gateway desktop with ASM Athlon 951 MHz, 256 RAM, running Windows XP Professional version 2002, with SP 2
Actions taken
A) Used Add/Remove programs to remove MacAfee, but still getting MacAfee splash screen at start up
B) Read the Geeks - "Before you post" message and followed all steps
1) Ran ATF Cleanup
2) Completed System Restore cleanup
3) Ad Aware (configured as described by Geeks)
4) Ran AVG Virus scan (removed one object)
5) Ran Panda on line virus scan
- it reported 1 spyware and 1 hacking tool,
then got hung up while scanning c:\CABS\Printers
(no action for 10-15 minutes, with 100% CPU usage).
I restarted and reran with identical results, so I couldn't save the log.
6) Ran Windows update - SP2 was already installed, so I couldn't avoid that)
7) Ran Hijack This
Saw that there were still "network associates" aka McAfee items running
C) Used msconfig to uncheck the McAfee start up items
D) Rebooted and tested system
- McAfee splash screen didn't show
- Computer is still very very slow
E) Used msconfig to re-check everything in the start up so that they would appear in the Hijack log, ran Hijack, and posted it below.
