WINWORD.EXE.....what is this?

Can someone tell me what WINWORD.EXE is?
I am assuming it has something to do with MSWord? But it is suddenly constantly running and is pegging my cpu usage to 100%. Is it safe to just close it down?

It's the main process for MS Word, and yes, as long as you aren't using Word is it would be safe to end the process.
