[Puter]

the trogen IRC backdoor flood virus is giving me fits trying to remove it . it's like it is protecting itself . avg picked it up but won't remove it . Can some one please look at this HJT file and let me know what i need to delete . Thanks .

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have an unremarkable HJT log. Can you please post the path of the Trojan as indicated by AVG and then we can simply delete it. I will try a tool that targets irc infections.

Please Disable Spyware Doctor. From within Spyware Doctor, click the OnGuard button on the left side. Uncheck Activate OnGuard

Please disable Spyware Detector real-time scanning as it will hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please download: SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
• Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

i'm going to wash system restore and run in safe mode , then create a new point Why? What will that achieve?

The logs will be good. Unremarkable means there is nothing unusual in your log, nothing suspicious, just very normal and completely unworthy of any remark.

Sorry about the bleep , trying to run sdfix . when i open folder it goes right into notepad ,scans , then closes and says it cant' find note pad . I see no run this bat , or where to type the letter Y . thought if i washed the sys restore that would let me remove it from there when i do the scan . there is a reason you do computers , and i do hardwood .

Please ensure you are following the SDFix commands fully. It has to be run in safe mode.

Just to ensure that your NOTEPAD is available, please click on START > RUN > type in notepad.exe > hit ENTER. Did notepad open?

Notepad opens . i ran it off the desk top , and safe mode . it does the same thing . i downloaded it . put a shortcut on the desktop . it is in the winzip folder .

Are you getting this message:

The SDFix Folder has been extracted to %systemdrive%

(%systemdrive% = Drive that contains Windows directory - typically 'C:\SDFix')

Please open the SDFix folder in Safe Mode and
Double Click the RunThis.bat file to start the fixtool.

If run in Normal Mode, options to download and run AV command line scanners are available

Let's not concern ourselves too much about that anyway. What would be really useful is the path of the file that AVG picks up as a Trojan; just post that and we can delete it.

EDIT - Just saw this posted on one of the forums, a slight change to the previous instructions.

Please download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear.
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

• In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
• Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the script.
• It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
• When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please note that you have two antimalware programmes running in real-time, Spyware Doctor and AVGas. This is not good practise as it will cause slowness and conflicts. You should only have one and then use the other for on-demand scanning.

You have posted a log from an AVGas scan. Please note that you have told the programme to ignore what it found. This means that all the bad stuff found is still there. You should set the recommended action to Quarantine. Below is how to set up and run AVGas correctly.

Please install, and update AVG Anti Spyware

• Load AVGas and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  
• Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  
• Under "Reports"
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
• Deselect "Only if threats were found"
• Close AVGas. Do not run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode

• In Safe Mode, load AVGas and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• AVGas will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVGas will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).
  
• Please ensure you post that log in your reply.
