I can not install updates, please help

Whenever i try to install any updates it never works. It always says "blah blah could not be installed". I have 36 updates on hold, including service pack 2. I do not understand why this is happening. Help would be much appreciated

awhile back, I saw a utility that would solve this problem. I'll continue to look for it....

edit....I would turn off automatic updates and try and download the smallest critical update available. Looking at my w2000 machine....I can go into control panel and then 'Automatic Updates' and then select 'turn off automatic updates'.
