I have a program called Process 1400 with a file C:/windows/ system 32/
m?ixec.exe that keeps wanting to access the internet.
I have ran Ad-Aware SE and have gotten rid of a tracking cookie(Data Miner).
I have ran SpyBots S&D and have gotten rid of somethings.
I ran CWS Shedder with nothing found.
I have ran Avast anti-virous with nothing found. MicroTrend House Call did find TROJ DLDR2 in C:/System Volume Information/-restore (21D7D-692-4662-421F-93B0-877B-*), which was non-cleanable, so I deleted it.
I rebooted the computer and re ran the test. Nothing showed up during the 2nd run of the test, but Zone Alarm showed Process 1440 still running and wanting acces to the internet.
Also went I rebooted I turned on task manager and there was a program called tcs.exe that was running. I have never seen this program listed before. after the system was totally re-booted it disappeared from the list.

The last hijack log is -

I was getting a lot of pop-ups earlier but not this evening.
I have installed Zone Alarm Free Firewall earlier todayand have been able to restrict programs from accessing the interenet and have prevented several port scans.

Please help. I seems like everytime the kids are on my computer there are problems soon afterwards.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Also can you tell me if there is an easy way to trank this post. Where I can go right to my posting to read replys and help topics, or do I need to just page through the froum until I find my posting.
Any and all help is very much appreciated.

mkreimer1,

Hello! and welcome to G2G forums.

===============

We'll need to unload (not uninstall) Intermute's SpySubtract, since it might interfere with other program(s) we might be using to 'clean' off your system.

===============

When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the Critical Windows Updates available from Microsoft, upto Service Pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccuring in the future.

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the update".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution (if provided in this post). This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\m?iexec.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D499577C-90C2-9C1D-BA88-929B1BAA3A90} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\cilgv.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar1\ViewBar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Vmmn] C:\WINDOWS\System32\m?iexec.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Image Transfer.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?

O16 - DPF: ppctlcab - http://ppupdates.ca....er/ppctlcab.cab
O16 - DPF: {2FC9A21E-2069-4E47-8235-36318989DB13} (PPSDKActiveXScanner.MainScreen) - http://ppupdates.ca....r/axscanner.cab

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to"view system and hidden files/folders":

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cilgv.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE do not restart your computer unless asked, restarting can reinfect your computer resulting in us starting the cleaning up process all over!

Hello Njustice,
And thanks again for your help.

I followed your directions.

I had installed updated earlier for windows, but did it agian this evening and then re-booted for the updated to take affect.
I then ran trend micro online scan and had no infected files detected.
CWShredder was updated and scanned with no infections found.
The latest version of HJT was ran and the files that you listed were fixed. The only files that were not present were -
R3-Default URLSearchHook is missing.
When I clicked "Fix checked" I got the following message -
Unexpected error occured! Error 52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath (?.exe) Please send a report to [email protected] mentioning what you are doing and what version of windows you have. I have not yet sent is report.
I then deleted folder - C:\Program files\Viewpoint
File - C:\Windows|System32\cilgv.dll was not present.

The following is the new HJT log.

Zone Alarm still shows a program named Process 1400 with a file named C:\Windows32|m?iexec.exe.

I will wait for your reply before I do anything else such as runnig and more Ad Aware , anti-virous etc. type programs and will not re-boot until instructed to do so.

Thanks again for your help.

mkreimer1,

Your log is clean...up above you state:

Zone Alarm still shows a program named Process 1400 with a file named C:\Windows32|m?iexec.exe.

Is this file trying to connect to the net or is it just listed in the program section of ZA?

If the latter just right click on that entry and select remove.

In any case let me know.

Hello Njustice,
I right clicked on Process 1400 and removed it from the Zone Alarm Screen.
Earlier today I ran Trend Micro House Call and nothing was detected. I also Have Avast Home Addition running and it poped up with a window saying it detected
C:\System Volumn Information\_restore(21D7D692-4662-421F-93B0 etc.)
Malware Win32:Trojan-gen.(other)
Malware Type Virus/Worm
VPS Version 0513-0 03/29/2005
I clicked Fix on the Avast Screen and it appeared to have fixed it or removed it from the system.
I don't know where it came from. I don't think any of my kids were online last night or this morning, but anything is possible around here.
Should I rum HJT again or do you think my system is completely cleaned. I run Micro Trend and Avast every couple of days and Ad Aware and SpyBot S&D also.
Is there anytging else that I need to do to keep this computer from getting infected again.
It seems like everytime the kids are on I found something on the computer that does not belong there.
Thanks for all your help. I could not have done this with out your help.
Let me know if you think it is safe to re-boot.

Hi mkreimer1, I would say that your computer is clean. The Malware Win32:Trojan-gen.(other) is in your system restore. Turning off system restore then rebooting and turning system restore back on will flush any baddies out.

At any rate.....

Congratulations at last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future(some you may have already taken).

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm
d. Bugoff: http://www.majorgeek...wnload4308.html

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.koll...n&page=download

Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware,htm

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. See the links below:
a. ZoneAlarm
b. Kerio

7. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore.

(WinXP)
a. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

b. Reboot.

c. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

8. Use GoogleToolbar - It's free, blocks popups and takes seconds to install. Use the toolbar without the advanced features enabled(check this during install), the toolbar is completely inert--it doesn't send any information to Google whatsoever as you surf.
a. GoogleToolbar

9. RegScrubXP 3.25 - Safely cleans junk out of the Windows. 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition.
a. RegScrubXP 3.25

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

Hello Njustice,
I don't know how I would have gotten through this without your help. Thank you so very much for your time and help. :tazz:
I when through the list of things to do. I disabled the system restore and re-boot the computer. I then set the Active X controls that you mentioned after I reset the Default settings. One question on this. There are 2 active X settings set to enable. These are Run ActiveX controls & plug-ins and Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting. Are these to be enabled or do I need to change these settings to Disable or Prompt?
Also I when through the list of programs that you had note on the last reply to help keep my system clean. Some of these I have and try to run them on a regular basis and keep them updated. My question is in regards to so other programs that I have installed. What is your opionion on these programs? -
X-Cleaner
Spyware DoctorSpySubtract
Spy Cleaner Gold
Avast Antivirus

Thank you again for all the help and additional information,
MKreimer ;)
