Hi Phil:

Tried to update Java in Safe Mode, but got the message;
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

How should I proceed from here?

Thanks!

Michael, please accept my apologies, I forgot to tell you to reboot normally after the file deletions, before updating Java, which is to close an exploit.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :whistling: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

It just remains for me to wish you happy safe surfing; I hope you found my advice helpful.

Hello Phil:

Thanks so much for all your time and patience. I am at work right now, but will complete the Java update when I return home this evening (around 11pm yout time). I will also do the System Restore stuff at that time.

How can I know for sure that I have no more nasties.....are there things I should watch for? As an example, while I was still infected and I went to the Kaspersky site, I ended up getting a popup for one of those fake antivirus sites.

I will also download the products you mention (already have some of them). Regarding the last two.....I already have the Trend Micro Internet Security Suite (http://www.trendmicr...te/overview.htm) installed, which has AV and firewall. Is this an aceptable alternative to the Zone Alarm and AVG Anti-Virus that you suggest?

I have been using Firefox already for the most part, and only use IE when a site specifically will not work under Firefox.

Again.....Please accept my thanks.

Best Regards,

Michael

You appear to be doing things correctly, your precautions are good. Most malware dealt with by this site, comes from music downloads via P2P networks. The MVPS MOSTS is a must for everyone, and remember to bookmark it since it is updated every 2 weeks, so you need to go there at least once a month.

AVGas should be used for the 30 day trial in real-time mode, and even if you decide not to purchase it, as an on-demand scanner after the 30 days, just manually update it each time.

I wish it was possible to have a 100% guarantee of a clean system, unfortunately it is not, but from what I see, you are 99.9% clean. Please don't use rogue scanners that tell you you that you have 4,000 bad registry entries, you don't, but they want your money and will tell you anything to get it.

I normally leave threads open for a few days just in case of misfortune.

Hello Phil:

Thank again for your note. I will get back to you this evening after I have made the Java update and installed some of the programs you suggest, beginning with the new HOSTS file.

Again....you have my gratitude.

Hi Phil:

Did the MVP hosts download and update.

Then, the first thing I did was run a Spybot S&D, and it is still picking up Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
The settings info is:
HKEY_Local_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Juan

It also found VirtuMonde
The settings is:
Tracking cookie (Internet Explorer: Michael Sandler)
Internet Explorer (Michael Sandler): Cookie: michael [email protected]/ ()

It also found MediaPlex
The settings:
Tracking cookie (Internet Explorer: Michael Sandler)
Internet Explorer (Michael Sandler): Cookie: michael [email protected] ()

I clicked Fix Selected Problems in Spybot. It said all three were fixed.

I had really hoped we were clean, but it appears not.
:-(

I will post a HiJack This log immediately following this post.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Regards,

Michael

Hello again Michael

Those are really innocuous; just cookies from tracking sites.

Your HJT log is still clean although I notice that you have not updated Java yet.

You can take a look at the Add & Remove Programs area of the Control Panel for Toolbar 888. If it's there, please uninstall it.

Give it 24 hours before passing judgement.

Hello Phil:

Thanks again.....I will update my Java shortly, and also install some of the other software you suggest.

The S&D entry that scared me was the
Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
Settings:
HKEY_Local_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Juan

That one didn't look like a cookie. May I inquire as to how you know to recognize this as a cookie.

Thank you so much. Keeping fingers crossed that the next 24 hours holds up well. I am absolutely terrified that we will have to start this again.

Regards,

Michael

Hello Michael

You sound confrontational with a challenge to me. Please allow me to explain that registry settings mean nothing without the files so back them up. You might have a thousand incorrect registry entries that cause no harm and an imperceptible slowdown.

Here is my advice.

Go to START > RUN > type in REGEDIT > hit ENTER > FILE > EXPORT > and think of a name for the exported registry, perhaps 112906.reg > save it to somewhere you will remember, I suggest the desktop.

Now click on EDIT > FIND > type in JUAN > and click FIND NEXT. When you find JUAN at this address:

HKEY_Local_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Juan

Please delete it by clicking EDIT > DELETE

Please reboot

I am trying to help you. I try not to be negligent. I must sign off for the night, it is after 1.00 a.m here.

Hi Phil:

Thanks for the followup. The internet is difficult sometimes since tone of voice cannot be heard. I was not trying to be confrontational, but rather trying to learn from the experience so that I can recognize a potentially problematic incident earlier next time.

I have learned a ton from you through this, and my last question really was to try to further my own education a little.

I have also been reading numbers of other threads here in an effort to learn more. I am a complete novice, but trying to learn a little.

Again....if I came across as anything other than appreciative, I genuinely apologize.

I am truly grateful for all your help.

KInd Regards,

Michael

Hi once more Phil:

I installed the freeware software packages you suggest, along with the update to Java. Scanned with Spobot S&B, AVGs and Pc-Cillin and they all came up clean.

Hijack This log is below.

Thank you for your patience, assistance, and thank you for the education.

Best Regards,

Michael
