Hi,
Last week I was using Bearshare and now all of a sudden it stopped working. On top of that I am getting really annoying pop-ups and the whole computer is acting crazy. I'd like to do a full clean up but i don't know where to start...

Can someone help me?

Thank you

Hello MeghanKawa and welcome to G2G's Malware Forum.

My name is Technical_1 and I will be analyzing your log.

Please note, as I am still in training, my posts must first be approved by one of the instructors before posting them here for you. This is to ensure accurate information for you. Thanks for your understanding. I'll be back here with you as quickly as possible.

Let's get a Hijack This log to analyze as well as an uninstall list.
  • Create a new folder on your desktop and name it HJT.
  • Please follow this link to get Hijack This.
  • Save Hijack This to your newly created folder.
  • Run Hijack This.
  • Click Scan and save log file.
  • Let's get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
    • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
    • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
    • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.

Perfect. :whistling:

I'll get it analysed and get a proposed fix put together. Once I get it approved by an advisor, I'll get it posted here for you. Bear with me as it could take a little while.

Hello again, MeghanKawa.

We'll pick-up on those other directions in a moment. Let's get rid of that BearShare entry first.
  • Remove Orphaned Entry
    • Open HiJackThis
    • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
    • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
    • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
    • Click on the entry you wish to delete (BearShare)
    • Click on Delete this entry
    • Click "Yes"
  • Rename Hijack This.
    • Right Click on Hijack This and select rename.
    • Change the name to AnalyseThat.exe
    • From now on, when I refer to Hijack This, you will use your newly renamed AnalyseThat.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  • Post Logs
    • New Hijack This Log

Hello again MeghanKawa and sorry for the delay.

Let's get those entries that we started to get the first time and also get a scan in.
  • I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:
    • Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter.
    • When the window opens you should be on the General tab.
    • Click on the Normal Startup item.
    • Then press ok until you are out of the program.
    • It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below being careful to get only these:

Any help would be appreciated as the computer is still running really slowly and I am having difficulty loading up pictures on websites. For example, when I go to Candian Tire's website, I can't view any of the items...

Thank you

I think that your slowness problem may be coming from all the start-up items you have running. These tasks, for the most part, do not need to be running when you start-up your computer and can be started manually if needed. Let's get a few and see if that helps the speed issue.
  • Download the AVG Anti-Spyware Installer to you Desktop.
    • Find the icon on your desktop and double click on it to install.
    • Let AVG AS open once it is installed.
    • The first thing you need to do is update the detection definition files.
    • From the main AVG AS screen, click on UPDATE in the top menu, then click the Start Update link.
    • After the update finishes (the status bar near the top will inform you of progress), click on the Scanner button in the top menu, then click on the Settings tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    • Close AVG AS.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below being careful to get only these:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YOP] C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\YOP\yop.exe /autostart
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ymetray] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Yahoo! Music Engine\ymetray.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OrderReminder] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\OrderReminder\OrderReminder\OrderReminder.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDSentry] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [diagent] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Diagnostics\diagent.exe" startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Exit Hijack This.
  • Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Delete Files/Folders
Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

    C:\Program Files\BearShare

  • Open AVG AS and click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    • If AVG AS finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
  • Reboot to normal mode.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  • Post Logs
    • AVG Anti-Spyware Results
    • New Hijack This Log

Also, I did as you said, I was in safe mode - I went to start - windows explorer - program files and I could not find bearshare...I also did a search and couldn't find it anywhere so therefore I wasn't able to delete it.

Thank you

Hello again, Meghan.

Looks like something may not be working correctly here. That Bearshare entry is still there along with all the others I had you fix. I don't see any protection programs that would be keeping the changes from taking place so something else must be going on. Did you run the New Hijack This Log after you did the fixes?

Let's get that Bearshare entry for good and let's go back through the Hijack This fixes.
  • Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please run HijackThis.
    • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
    • Place a check mark beside the following item(s)

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YOP] C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\YOP\yop.exe /autostart
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ymetray] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Yahoo! Music Engine\ymetray.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OrderReminder] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\OrderReminder\OrderReminder\OrderReminder.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDSentry] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [diagent] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Diagnostics\diagent.exe" startup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause

    • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
    • Select: "Delete on Reboot"
    • Then click on the "All Files" button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

      C:\Program Files\BearShare

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
    • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and scan and save a new log file.
  • Post Logs
    • New Hijack This Log
