Hi everyone, I stupidly downloaded BitRoll and my system has become infected with Malware / Spyware that is causing a lot of popups and "targetted" ad-spamming.

So far I have:-

Been over the pre-requisite steps in the sticky
- Ran ATF-Cleaner
- Created a new system restore point and removed all old ones
- Ran Ad-aware SE and removed all spyware related objects
- Ran AVG in safe-mode and removed any malicious / spyware related programs
- Ran PandaSoft's Active Scan and saved subsequent logs
- Ran HijackThis and saved subsequent logs

(I already had XP Pro SP2 installed with all updates when I became infected and I own my copy of XP Pro so it's not a hacked / fake copy)

Results are as follows with relevant logs:-

I've looked also at the previous thread but there seem to be a lot of differences between my logs and his (mainly due to the difference in our systems and installed software etc) so I thought it'd be best to seek assistance in a separate thread, even if the root cause of the problem is still BitRoll.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

If you need more details then let me know, I think I covered everything here though....

Hi there :whistling:

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Axis Jugs Free Love] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MPEG GREAT AXIS JUGS\Bags Math.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CopySlow] C:\DOCUME~1\GREGBR~1\APPLIC~1\AXISHO~1\META LICENSE.exe

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Reboot

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hey loophole, thanks for the quick reply...apologies for not replying sooner!

I've done what you said with the registry entries in question and rebooted but when I ran ComobFix it gets to a command window which is titled "Find3M" and the window hangs with a message saying it's creating the report and it takes time etc but after leaving my PC on overnight I found that it never continued through the rest of the program.

I tried booting up and trying again this morning with ComboFix before I went to work but it did the same thing and I had to hard-reboot / power down my PC.

Does ComboFix HAVE to be run from desktop or is there just a problem with my system trying to run the program? I've checked the log that it created while it was hanging as well and it doesn't show anything at all besides the first lines of generic reporting where it tells you it's a log from ComboFix...

Any help appreciated.

I'm still getting pop-ups too so there could still be something lurking in the registry possibly.

Hi again :whistling:

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the white box below into a new text file. Save it as "delete.bat" WITH THE QUOTES and save it on your Desktop.

attrib -s -r -h "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MPEG GREAT AXIS JUGS\*.*"
rd /q /s "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MPEG GREAT AXIS JUGS"
attrib -s -r -h "C:\DOCUME~1\GREGBR~1\APPLIC~1\AXISHO~1\*.*"
rd /q /s "C:\DOCUME~1\GREGBR~1\APPLIC~1\AXISHO~1"

after saving as instructed above, please close notepad. You will now have a file on your desktop called delete.bat. Dont do anything with it yet

If you didnt install party poker, please uninstall it

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CopySlow] C:\DOCUME~1\GREGBR~1\APPLIC~1\AXISHO~1\META LICENSE.exe

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Please double click the Delete.bat you made earlier, and run it. It will only take a second

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed as follows:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Reboot and post a new Hijack log

Hi :whistling:

How is the popup situation now??

Combofix didnt show me something else I wanted to see, can you do this for me

Download Findlop by Metallica. Unzip it to your desktop.
Double click findlop.bat. It will open a notepad file.
Copy the content of that file and paste it here in your reply.

The popup situation seems to have gotten a lot better...I've not (to my memory) encountered any since the last fix you asked me to do.

I've run the batch file you asked me to download anyway and the resulting log looks like this:-

I'm guessing that maybe we've taken out the files / registry entries that caused the popups to spawn but there is some rogue straggling file on my PC that is possibly still a threat?

Cheers again for all the help.

Yes just need to clean up a couple things

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the white box below into a new text file. Save it as "delete1.bat" WITH THE QUOTES and save it on your Desktop.

attrib -s -r -h "C:\WINDOWS\tasks\ABFF01B893D8BF90.job"
del /q "C:\WINDOWS\tasks\ABFF01B893D8BF90.job"
quit

after saving as instructed above, please close notepad. You will now have a file on your desktop called delete1.bat. Please doubleclick it and run it

You can delete the 2 batch files we created

Browse here C:\program files and look for one of these folders and delete if they are present:
MPEG GREAT AXIS JUGS
axisshow <<<< thats the first six letters of the folder

Post a final hijack log for review and let me know how the computer is running.

The PC appears to be running fine, I've done the final batch file you gave me and the scan from HijackThis is at the end of this post. Not encountered any popups yet too so I think we're clean.

One thing I noticed though is a directory in Program Files called "xerox" which contains another seemingly empty directory called "nwwia". I know for a fact that I don't own / have any Xerox products installed so this smacks of another piece of malware / spyware.

Any ideas on how to remove this? Is it worth me doing another batch file to take this dir out or is there more to it than that?

Kerek is probably just a leftover from something, probably not malware. If your sure you dont need it you can just delete it by browsing to it.

Did you uninstall party pker,it looks like you did, If so you can fix these with hijack

let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.
