here is the uninstall list. I did everything now except the bitdefender online scan which I'll set going now. I had deleted the O17 item but it came back again so maybe something is still lurking, but hopefully we'll get there, at least the URLs seem to be working again

:whistling: Post a new Hijack This log and the results of the BitDefender scan when it is finished.

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall this old version of Java:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

* Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

Also do this please:

* Download Blacklight from here.

Save it to your desktop.
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

am doing the java update and ready to run blacklight beta. A whole weekend of work lost because of some dumb infection got from just browsing the web. Do I need to be using another browser? another OS? this truly sucks!

Here is the latest HJT log, once again, the O17 item had reappeared (tcpip Name Server) so I deleted that

can you give me any info about the O17 Name Server thing that keeps appearing in my HJT log, does this mean something is still lurking? What is it trying to do?

the web links and browser seem to be functioning normally but this entry looks wrong and you keep asking me to delete it so I know something is amiss. Am I making it worse by deleting it through HJT whenver I see it? What's causing it to pop back in I have no idea, is it perhaps whenever IE is being loaded?

some further info. After doing some other work on PC, I went to IE, wouldn't work - even though I realised I had bittorrent running and downloading (ie the network was OK). Email was also coming in OK. However, the browser was acting like the network was cut off. I checked HJT and the O17 item was still gone (I'd deleted it after posting here).
I went into my network connection manager, looked OK, but I disconnected, and reconnected - Browser then worked again, i.e. web pages turned up

THEN I ran HJT and hey presto the O17 Name Server is back.

So it seems that there is some sneaky little thing still hiding! This is nightmarish, but thanks for sticking with it for me. You've definitely earned a paypal payment for this one!

* Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
  • Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
  • It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
  • Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
  • After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
  • Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
  • Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.

I want you to try fixing the O17 entry again, but this time I want you to disable Windows Defnder and Spybot's Tea-Timer first. I'm hoping that is what is blocking the fix. Also in the direction I have posted where I ask you to go to the Network Connections settings, after you have checked the Obtain DNS server address automatically option you need to be sure yo are applying the actions by clicking the Apply and OK buttons on your way out.

I still want you to post the results of the AVG Anti-Rootkit and post those results as well. Go ahead and do this again please.

** Before you proceed with the removal directions below you need to turn off Windows Defender's realtime protection and Spybot's Tea-Timer. They may be interfering with the changes we are trying to make.
  • Open Windows Defender and click on Tools > General Settings.
  • Scroll down and remove the check by "Turn on realtime protection (recommended)".
  • Click "Save"
  • Leave it disabled until we are finished here.
