here is the AVG rootkit result, finding 22 "hidden" files that seem to be old MP3s ripped from a CD. I ticked them off to be removed and will now do the fixwareout/O17 fix as you describe

here you go, no sign of the O17 after the restart (see log below)
BUT
as soon as I came here to post it and checked HJT again, it's back (see second log). Whether it's me connecting to the network, or opening IE, I am stumped!

(After getting the first log, I put Defender and TeaTimer back, connected to the internet and then opened IE, accessed this page through history, and then did another HJT scan (see 2nd log).

When doing the DNS settings, my PC is already set to the options you said, but I even clicked it off then on and OKed and then flushed the dns

I deleted O17 with HJT again

You haven't disabled MS Antispyware or Te-Timer. They are both still running. You need to disable them so they do not load the next time you start Windows.

what are the files for MS AntiSpy and TeaTimer?
If you check the first log, TeaTimer is definitely not in there is it? I disabled both programs as you instructed, ran the fix, rebooted, did the DNS, flushed it, did HJT - the O17 was not there to remove.

(see log1)

I then re-enabled Defender realtime protection and teatimer, connected, opened IE to view this and ran HJT (log 2) and the O17 was back

am I doing something in the wrong order. I don't think I am - I followed your instructions (printed out) in the exact order you said

Also, as mentioned - after the fix/reboot/DNS/flush - the O17 item was NOT present in HJT to remove it.

I only re-enabled Realtime Defender and Teatimer AFTER saving that log, and then ran HJT again after I'd replied here, and the O17 was there again.

Repeated instructions again, I even shut down apps in task manager before running the fix.

here are HJT logs at each stage, I can see clearly that the O17 entry is only turning up when I connect to the internet using my SpeedTouch ASDL shortcut quick launch icon

PreFix log - fine, and shut down those programs and others in Task Manager

Post Fix log - still no sign of O17

Post DNS flush - still no sign of O17

Post Reboot - still no sign of O17

Post Connect - O17 has reappeared. (not even opened IE at this stage)

I've again deleted O17 in HJT and re-enabled SpyBot and Defender.

Browser URLs seem to be working though strange network behaviour, sometimes email works but web pages behave as if it's offline and not connected, needs connection closing and redialiing.

I've now spent the entire weekend applying fixes, scanning for viruses and malware, what a mess! I know this must also be a right pain in the [bleep] for you as well.

I don't see anything anywhere that would account for the O17 re-appearing. This leads me to believe that it could be either Tea-Timer or MS-Antispyware that is putting it back. That is why I want you to disable them and leave them disabled. If you disable them completely as I said to and the entries remain gone only to return when you turn them back on then that proves that one of them is putting them back. As far as I can tell, you have not disabled them completey yet.

Are you getting any alerts to changes when you turn them back on?

no, though I did get something from spywareguard about some changes to home page and search page but they were all microsoft so i reverted to the old values.

If there was somewhere I could read about what the heck this O17 Name Server actually is, and under what circumstances something like SpyBot or Defender would put them back it would be useful.

I'll try repeating again, and connecting before those programs are enabled - though I thought that's what I had done!

WOO HOO
I think I've gotten something here!

All the time I've been doing the fix and flushing DNS and having auto DNS set on the Local Area Connection, but then it occurred to me I am using what's called "SPeedtouch ADSL connection", when I went in there, and looked - the DNS settings are, yes, you've guessed it,

"use these settings"

85.255.116.154

which is exactly whats coming in the O17. Which is why whenever I connect its coming back, and why when I fix it in HJT, my network is suddenly cut off on web browsing#

am I right?

Now, the big question is, is this IP address "real" and tied in to my ISP setting ? (Virgin.net), or is this the problem and where I need to change to "Get DNS automatically" followed by DNSflush?

No, that IP address is not your ISP. It is a DNS hijack.

I'll try repeating again, and connecting before those programs are enabled - though I thought that's what I had done!

Did you try this yet. I want you to do it all again in the exact order as I gave it to you after you have disabled Tea-Timer and Windows Defender. The directions are given in a specific order and are to be carried out in that exact order.

After you have done that, do not re-enable Tea-Timer or MS Anti-spyware. Come back here and connect to the internet then scan with Hijack This and post the new log. I want to see a log that shows that Tea-Timer and MS Anti-spyware are not running after the fix has been done and you have connected to the internet.

PreFix log - fine, and shut down those programs and others in Task Manager

Don't shut those down with the Task Manager. Shut them down exactly as my instructions say too please. Shuttin them down with the Task Manger soes not stop them from loading again automatically when you restart the computer.

when i ping my ISP virgin net, the IP number is 194.168.54.50 - same first 2 numbers as my O17 entry, though the ping failed!

it seems too much of a coincidence not to be something genuine?

This is what it is supposed to be:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{6F70E459-EBC5-4F47-9CD1-943A87DEE7D2}: NameServer = 194.168.4.100 194.168.8.100

The DNS hijack is gone.

How is the pc behaving now?
