We've been having many alerts per day from Spycatcher about IEPlugin, New.Net, and ClientMan. Everything I've done to try to find the cause has had no effect. Initially I'd hoped these were false alerts, but system performance has degraded too much to believe that.

Yesterday, after the first appearance of the ClientMan alert, we lost Internet connectivity on this box. The worrisome bit is that while we were unable to connect via any browser or POPmail, the icon in the system tray was quite active, clearly sending and receiving data. In addition, our other computer still had internet connectivity even though the broadband router is on this box. The DSL modem is connected to this box, so I'd certainly have thought that no access here would mean no access on that other system.

I've run many of the tools you recommend here, with some success (we are now connected to the net again, for example). But the alerts keep coming up -- I will say that they are not as frequent now. We had been getting alerts every 5 minutes, now just 2 or 3 times an hour.

Now, even though the scans are mostly clean, I think we still have some nastiness lurking within. I have done all the scans listed in your 'read before posting' guide, and the logs follow.

Notes:

1. We are running AVG Free Antivirus now. The Yahoo Online Protection Suite is in the startups, and active in the system tray now, but not running. This is another disturbing symptom: We installed YOP, selected their Antivirus protection, and even ran a full scan last week. Two days ago, when I wanted to run another scan, I found it turned off, with an indicator that it's not installed. I was unable to reinstall it from Yahoo.

I will be uninstalling the whole Yahoo/Verizon package when this mess is resolved. It's only still there because I anticipate it won't be easy to do (pointers appreciated, when the time is appropriate :whistling: ).

2. The "YouBet" stuff is something my spousal unit runs because he was told it's "perfectly safe". Not to interfere with his fun, but if it's not safe I will not hesitate to trash it.

3. I've recently "uninstalled" the Mcafee Security Center and Antivirus protection. This is another of the red flag symptoms that had me searching for problems (even before yesterday's connection loss). A few months ago we got an automatic update to the Mcafee Security Center that replaced the whole thing with a new version. We've had problems with it ever since. Last week, another automatic update came along, and it hung up the entire system. CPU pegged at 100%, and it was so locked up that I couldn't even get the Task Manager open to find out what process was involved. At one point, we left the system untouched for over 3 hours while that "update" proceeded. It hung on "installing" and never finished, and continued to do that after each reboot until I started killing processes (sometimes I could open the Task Manager, other times not).

Trying to uninstall Mcafee was one of my worse decisions. It took some doing, but most of it is gone now. Guidance on removing the remnants would be appreciated.

I do have a nagging question about Mcafee though -- the update that changed Security Center seemed major, but our other computer did not get the same update. It is still running a version that uses a red rectangle icon in the system tray, while the update this box received changed the system tray icon to a 3-dimensional silver icon. Why on earth would we have two different versions of that software on two different machines that have the same subscription? Should I have been concerned about that months ago?

...Anyway, enough of the narrative, on to the logs:

Ran ATF Cleaner

Created new System Restore point, flushed old ones

Ran Ad-aware SE after updating, per your instructions. It is clean now.

Downloaded AVG Antispyware and ran it in Safe mode -- clean except for a few tracking cookies (deleted).

Windows Updates are current, except for IE7. I'm going to wait on that. We use the automatic update feature, so this wasn't out of date.

Looks good, rebooted. Immediately upon reboot, I got an IEPlugin alert (Spycatcher lists traces in wdmaud.drv, smartbridge, and YOP). I've had two more alerts while composing this.
