When my PC is starting after a switch-on or after a reboot,
I get the standard "Black Screens" and just before the first "Blue
Screen" with the Windows XP logo appears, I get a black screen
with the following:
"Invalid BOOT.INI File
Booting from C:\WINDOWS\ "

Please, your assistance.

This issue happened more than once. I'm trying to run sfc /scannow at least
four times since yesterday, but without success. At the beginning I get the window with
the progress bar, but after few seconds, a second window pop-up asking to insert the cd
(when the cd is already inserted). Clicking on the box "Retry" is not solving the issue.,

press start > run > type "chkdsk /f /r" in the run window (without the quotes) it will probably tell you it has to reschedule on next boot...tell it ok and reboot the computer....let the disk check run uninterupted...report any errors

I ran "chkdsk /f /r" (approximately 35 minutes) yesterday with no error, i.e. after performing the "fifth step"
Windows program followed (open) immediately

Yes. I already ran a repair installation (with the same cd) last August.
I will try to run it tomorrow if necessary. Do you think it will solve this issue?
What the remark "Invalid BOOT.INI) means? Because I'm feeling that I'm using my PC "normally".

Thanks for your time and kind assistance.

boot.ini is a file located on your computer that controlls how your computer boots up...

your computer, when it boots, will go through POST (power on self test) to check all the hardware and configurations to make sure things are correct at the most basic level...after that the computer doesn't know what to do, because the system running post has no idea what windows is...so at the end of POST it searches the harddrive for Boot.ini so that it can then know what to do...if it can't find Boot.ini or if the file is messed up...it fails..

there's a chance that there's a problem with your harddrive (hence the chkdsk) or possibly other hardware (such as a processor or ram)

a repair install will (SHOULD) replace the boot.ini file with a good version...so it should fix it....there are other ways of fixing the Boot.ini problem...but a repair will get it done...and may fix some other issues as well

Hello sam-my...

Mind if I take a peek at your boot.ini file?

Open Control Panel and double click the "System" icon. Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Startup and Recovery" section, click the "Settings" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Edit" button.

A notepad window will open (boot.ini)...copy the contents of that window and paste it here for us.
