When setting up my dial-up connection I can specify obtain dns server address automatically, rather than select my chosen numbers.

However, I am not sure how this works, does this mean that my Isps own numbers will be used by default, or is there another explanation.

Means the connection will use the DNS Servers provided by your ISP. When you connect, the computer asks for an IP address and the DNS addresses, otherwise it won't go anywhere.
