Completly lost picture in adobe photoshop !

Please help,,, i was trying to crop a very sentimental picture of which i sent a copy into photoshop 7, from my pictures folder.
After cropping the picture to the correct dimensions, i saved it.
For some reason, i now have a saved picture of,, nothing, its completly black.
In a panic, i went back into my pictures folder, only to find the photo was the same as in photoshop, completly black.
I dont understand whats happened, as it was only a copy of the picture that i sent,,,,,, what have i done !!!!

I am really upset with this, as its the only copy i had, and its a very personal and sentimental picture of my wife. I dont even have it backed up on my external harddrive.

The original picture is gone completly,,,
